Self-Funded Specialist (Employee Benefits)

About the role
The Self-Funded Specialist (SFS) develops and maintains strategic partnerships with clients, internal GBS brokers, and consultants. This role collaborates with internal teams on all aspects of self-funding, including implementations, compliance, stop-loss, vendor management, and plan design consultation. The ideal candidate is an effective communicator, strategic thinker, consultative, and able to present, lead, and foster relationships.
Responsibilities
- Participate in all aspects of the self-funded bid process and renewals.
- Implement new and existing self-funded clients with carriers, third-party administrators (TPAs), and Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs).
- Review Plan Documents, Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs), Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBCs), and Stop Loss contracts.
- Assist brokers with renewals and prospects as needed.
- Coordinate with GBS staff to complete special projects.
- Review self-funded contracts, including Administrative Service Agreements, NDAs, and Business Associate Agreements.
- Update and manage the project management tool.
Requirements
- Self-funded healthcare experience is required.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Strong and effective communicator via letters, emails, telephone, and in-person conversations.
- Positive attitude with a willingness and ability to work as part of a team.
- Hard-working, detail-oriented, proactive, and organized, with strong multi-tasking and prioritization skills.
Working Conditions
This position operates in a climate-controlled office environment with ergonomically designed workspaces. Daily tasks include computer interfacing, data entry, electronic and physical communications, movement throughout the office, and attending meetings. Physical demands involve lifting and moving objects (typically 0–10 lbs.) and visually monitoring information on a computer screen.
