About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to support elementary-aged students in the Covington, Washington area for the 2026–2027 school year. This role is an excellent opportunity to positively impact student learning, communication, and social development within a collaborative educational environment. The ASL Interpreter will facilitate communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students, teachers, staff, peers, and families while supporting full access to academic instruction and school activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate and effective ASL interpretation for students throughout the school day.
  • Interpret classroom instruction, small-group activities, assemblies, field trips, meetings, and other school-related events.
  • Facilitate communication between students, educators, staff, and peers while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Support student access to educational content in accordance with IEP goals and accommodations.
  • Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and related service providers to promote student success.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and professional ethical standards.
  • Prepare for classroom content and instructional materials to ensure accurate interpretation.
  • Participate in team meetings and professional development activities as required.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet Washington State requirements for educational interpreters, including:

  • Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) Certificate as an Educational Interpreter or ability to obtain prior to start date.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Compliance with Washington State educational interpreter qualification standards.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and best practices for supporting deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
  • Ability to work effectively with elementary-aged students and educational teams.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience interpreting in a K-12 educational setting.
  • Experience supporting elementary-aged students.
  • EIPA, RID, NIC, or comparable interpreting credentials.
  • Familiarity with special education environments and IEP implementation.

Pay & Schedule

  • Competitive hourly compensation: $40–$45 per hour
  • Consistent school-based schedule: up to 40 hours per week
  • Full school-year assignment for the 2026–2027 academic year
