Security Specialist, First Response Officer

About the Role

The part-time Security Specialist & First Response Officer ensures the security and protection of the museum facility, campus, visitors, staff, volunteers, and collections. The role involves patrolling the building, campus, and grounds, providing exceptional customer service, conducting hazard/safety checks, parcel inspections, and assisting with crowd management. The incumbent also provides first aid response, Control Room support, and assists with training other department and museum staff.

Responsibilities

• Conduct patrols of the building, campus, grounds, and parking areas.
• Perform facility security opening duties before public hours and secure the building after closing.
• Conduct and report hazard and safety checks to prevent vandalism, misuse, damage, or theft of museum property.
• Provide first response with first aid, including CPR, for injuries and illnesses to visitors, staff, and volunteers.
• Support outside agencies during emergencies by providing security or medical assistance.
• Deliver exceptional customer service to visitors, staff, and volunteers, enforcing museum policies and procedures.
• Assist with reuniting lost children and manage conflicts through de-escalation and negotiation.
• Ensure safe delivery of cash and money transports by escorting authorized personnel.
• Provide traffic and parking assistance during high visitation periods.
• Lead emergency protocols for evacuation and relocation, assisting visitors and staff during emergencies.
• Participate in the Safety Warden program and respond to all emergency situations and drills.
• Remain cross-trained on Control Room operations, serving as a secondary operator when needed.
• Monitor alarms and security cameras.
• Operate fire and life safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and emergency defibrillators.
• Provide basic vehicular assistance, such as jump starts, lockouts, and tire changes.
• Serve as backup for pooled staff coverage when needed.

Requirements

• Two (2) years of proven experience in security and first response.
• CPR/AED and Stop the Bleed certification (or proof of attainment within 6 months of employment).
• EMR/EMT certification preferred.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Strong understanding of de-escalation and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals.
• Availability to work weekends, holidays, and evening shifts.
• Ability to stand for long periods and work outside in all weather conditions.
• Special consideration for multi-lingual applicants.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform extensive work in indoor and outdoor environments.
• Capability to perceive space, read documents and diagrams, and view computer monitors.
• Ability to communicate effectively through projecting voice and varying tone, including group discussions.
• Ability to sit, stand, squat, and kneel for long periods frequently.
• Capability to navigate pedestrian travel throughout the museum and campus.
• Ability to lift objects up to 45 pounds.
• Tolerance for dust in indoor environments and extreme temperatures/humidity outdoors.
