Specialized security officer with advanced training in de-escalation techniques, non-lethal defensive systems, defensive tactics, and critical thinking. Primarily serves in the Emergency Department as the first responder to violent and dangerous situations, acting as the primary liaison with law enforcement during critical incidents. Serves as a visual deterrent to crime and violence, directs security response to violent incidents, and assists with patrol functions, welfare and safety of personnel and patients, investigations, and security assistance to employees, patients, and visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol
    • Patrols facility buildings and grounds to watch for unauthorized persons, fires, and unusual occurrences; reports emergencies immediately.
    • Apprehends suspects in cases of conflict, escalation, unauthorized entry, malicious mischief, or other violations.
    • Escorts visitors, patients, and employees as needed.
    • Responds promptly to all Code Red and disaster alerts.
    • Enforces security rules and regulations, patrols grounds by foot or vehicle, reacts calmly in emergencies, communicates effectively, and prepares incident reports.
    • Follows instructions and safe work practices; responds immediately to appropriate locations.
    • May be assigned to work at any facility as needed.
  • Tactical
    • Serves as the primary point of contact with law enforcement during critical incidents.
    • Monitors and assesses situations to determine appropriate response.
    • Utilizes critical thinking, verbal de-escalation, and advanced workplace violence mitigation skills in emergencies.
    • Assists medical staff in restraining and handling disturbed patients.
    • Acts as a point of contact for other officers as needed.
  • Customer Assistance
    • Acts as liaison with Flagstaff Fire and Police Departments; maintains professional relationships with local law enforcement and emergency agencies.
    • Interacts with staff, physicians, visitors, volunteers, and patients.
  • Documentation
    • Conducts investigations and prepares investigative reports.
    • Maintains accurate logs of all relevant security activities during each shift.
    • Documents fire and disaster responses accurately.
  • Compliance/Safety
    • Reports safety-related incidents in a timely manner through the Midas/RDE tool.
    • Attends all safety-related training programs and performs work in a safe manner.
    • Monitors work environment for safety issues and ensures compliance with safety practices, including the use of necessary weapons (e.g., taser).
    • Completes all mandatory company and job-specific training within specified time frames.
    • Stays current with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required).
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License with no moving violations within the prior 39 months (Required upon hire).
  • BLS (American Heart Assoc) certification (Required within 3 months from date of hire).
  • IAHSS (International Association of Hospital Safety and Security) certification (Required within 3 months from date of hire).
  • Staff Defense Basic and Staff Defense Advanced certifications (Required within 3 months of hire).
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card application number (Required upon hire).
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card (Required within 90 days of hire).
  • Taser Certification (Preferred).
  • 3 years of law enforcement or military experience or 7 years of experience in a hospital setting (Preferred).
  • Experience in a healthcare setting (Preferred).

Skills

  • Advanced critical thinking and monitoring skills.
  • Ability to calmly and peacefully resolve situations involving people in crisis.
  • Physical fitness to pass the Cooper Institute Physical Fitness Assessment Test (1.5-mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, vertical jump, and 300-meter run) before selection to the Tactical Officer Certification Course and on a bi-annual basis to retain employment in the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU).
  • Proficiency in critical thinking, de-escalation techniques, non-lethal weapons systems, and tactical exercises as demonstrated in the Tactical Officer Certification Course.
  • Competency in using computers and basic software programs.
  • Ability to operate independently and as part of a unit.
