Security Officer - part-time

About the role

As a Security Officer, you will be part of a professional team providing a safe and secure environment for the Brigham and Women’s Hospital community. This role requires flexible schedule availability, adaptability to evolving operations, and motivation to meet high professional standards.

Receiving general direction from the Security Supervisor, you will ensure a safe and secure environment, provide protective services, and assist with the day-to-day operations of the department.

Responsibilities

• Provide protection to people and property through patrol, investigation, monitoring alarms, and surveillance cameras.
• Patrol buildings and grounds to identify unsafe conditions and improperly secured areas/property to prevent theft, injuries, or damages.
• Deliver high-level customer service by interacting with patients, visitors, and staff in a proactive, friendly, and helpful manner; create safety awareness.
• Respond to emergencies and conduct preliminary investigations into thefts, shortages, and complaints involving potential misconduct.
• Provide escorts for staff, visitors, and patients as requested.
• Perform patient restraints and detain individuals suspected of criminal conduct.
• Maintain accountability for valuables, property, and evidence.
• Assist motorists with jump starts and lockouts.
• Prepare and submit complete, accurate written reports and log all incidents.
• May be assigned to special duties such as Bike Patrol or Community Liaison Officer.
• May be assigned to off-site locations, including administrative buildings, ambulatory care centers, and community-based health clinics.
• Cross-trained in other locations beyond normally assigned workspace.
• May be required to work other shifts and/or locations as necessary.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of a high school diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
• 1-3 years of security or related experience preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s license from state of residence.
• Must submit to and pass an initial and annual criminal background check.
• Must obtain and maintain required certifications (training provided by department):
  • CPR/AED/First Aid
  • Narcan (Naloxone) Training
  • AVADE/HDTS De-Escalation Training
  • International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) Basic Officer Certification (within first 90 days)
• Ability to be licensed as a Special State Police Officer under the Commonwealth of MA General Laws Chapter 22 C, section 63 preferred.

Working Conditions

• Physically able to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand/walk for a minimum of 8 hours.
• Ability to run to emergencies within the hospital and adjoining campuses, and verbally/physically control emergency situations if necessary.
• Strong sight and hearing abilities to effectively handle diverse and emergency situations.
• Capacity to use appropriate force to overcome, arrest, or restrain someone if necessary.

Each officer must pass the following functional assessments upon hire (within the first 90 days) and annually:

• 3 Minute Step Test: Measures heart rate recovery after three minutes of stepping.
• Step, Bend, and Crawl: Measures mobility and coordination by stepping over a hurdle, bending and crawling under a table, and stepping over a second hurdle.
• Stretcher Carry: Measures ability to assist in lifting a stretcher loaded with approximately 150 lbs.
• Pull and Drag: Measures upper body strength by dragging a 150 lb. sled 10 feet and back.
• Balance Walk: Measures balance by walking on a 1-inch wide tape.
• Stair Climb: Measures ability to climb four flights of stairs quickly (within 35 seconds).

Schedule

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM (24 scheduled weekly hours).

Pay

Pay range: $23.34 - $33.37 per hour (Grade 5). At Mass General Brigham, base pay is determined by skills, relevant experience, education, certifications, and other essential factors.
