Security Officer I - Security - Sharp Memorial Hospital - Variable Shift - PRN

Hourly Pay Range: $27.50 – $33.53 (minimum – maximum). The stated pay scale reflects the range Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual pay rate and pay grade will depend on years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, and employer business practices.

What You Will Do

Under general supervision, provides protective services to assigned locations, patients, visitors, and staff. Adheres to Sharp HealthCare and departmental quality service standards.

• Patrols Sharp HealthCare premises on foot or in a vehicle to protect life and property.
• Manages disruptive persons professionally with a minimum use of force; controls access to restricted and security-sensitive areas.
• Responds to fire/security alarm activations, assumes scene command in emergency situations; observes and reports safety hazards, gives direction and assistance to Sharp HealthCare clientele.
• Performs other related duties and functions appropriate to the job as needed.

Responsibilities

• Customer Service
  • Responds to routine calls in a timely manner; provides direction, information, problem-solving, and escort services to internal and external customers with courtesy and cooperation.
  • Initiates brief contacts with visitors and staff to ensure their needs are met.
  • Screens members, visitors, and employees to expedite admittance to the facility.
  • Provides patient escort, patient watch, safety escort, and monitors emergency call boxes.
• Daily Report
  • Completes incident reports neatly, accurately, concisely, and legibly, free from spelling and grammatical errors, submitted at the end of the scheduled shift.
  • Updates electronic administrative and criminal files; sorts, performs data entry, distributes, and files reports.
• Department Policies and Procedures
  • Knows the location of fire alarm boxes, emergency telephone numbers, and procedures for situations such as Life Flight, fire, disaster, etc.
• Parking Enforcement
  • Enforces parking regulations; completes tickets neatly, accurately, and legibly, free from spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Handles towing situations appropriately and thoroughly following departmental policy.
• Security Rounds
  • Patrols hospital interior and grounds, alert for persons or situations threatening life or property.
  • Conducts patrols on foot or via vehicle 4–6 times per shift, checking for unsafe conditions, blocked entryways, security violations, mechanical problems, and unauthorized individuals.
  • Utilizes video monitoring systems as needed; remains vigilant for signs of crime, disorder, hazard, and unusual activity.
• Stat Calls
  • Orally and physically de-escalates individuals, using force as a last resort.
  • Assists fellow officers when needed; responds to incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, elevator emergency, hazardous materials, or inclement weather.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• California Security Guard Card (CA Bureau of Security & Investigative Services) – REQUIRED.
• California Driver’s License (CA Department of Motor Vehicles) – REQUIRED.

Preferred Qualifications

• College coursework in Criminal Justice, Sociology, or Psychology.
• 1 year of security-related experience.
• 1 year of experience in hospital security/healthcare setting.
• IAHSS Basic Certification – PREFERRED.
• Reliable transportation and adequate personal insurance coverage.
• Clean driving record in accordance with employer DMV pull notice program and Sharp HealthCare Driver Guidelines.

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of and experience enforcing rules, regulations, guidelines, security policies, and procedures.
• Ability to serve and work well with the public as a solo officer and as an effective team member.
• Ability to comply with instructions and counsel from supervisors.
• Maintains professionalism in stressful situations; takes charge, manages incident scenes, and coordinates efforts with others outside the department.
• Competent in defensive tactics and arrest/control techniques; follows proper officer safety tactics and procedures.
• Demonstrated skills in operating a motor vehicle under emergency and police-related driving conditions.
• Accurate report writing skills, including proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, and cohesive organization of facts.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook.
• Interest in public service; understands the importance of stressing the spirit of the law, not just enforcing the letter of the law.
• Experience communicating in various forums: one-on-one, in groups, in stressful situations, and in writing.
• Strong sound judgment; ability to process information quickly and thoroughly, making effective and ethical decisions.
• Proven maturity and poise when dealing with supervisors, management, co-workers, and the community.
• Ability to react, cope, and reason according to established standards and practices.
• Ability to utilize resources in an organized manner.
• Basic knowledge of penal codes.

Schedule

Shift start and end times are variable. Weekend requirements as needed. On-call required.
