Placement within the salary range is dependent on relevant work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement is guided by the collective bargaining agreement.

About the role

This position is located at Catherine Gratz Griffin Lake Forest Hospital. The Security Officer I reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards.

Under the direction of Security Leadership, this role is responsible for protecting the hospital from theft and damage, ensuring the safety of patients, visitors, associates, and medical staff, investigating and quelling disturbances, and restraining patients as directed by medical or clinical staff.

Responsibilities

• Investigates and quells hospital incidents and disturbances to maintain security for patients, visitors, and employees.
• Completes descriptive reports for supervisory personnel.
• Notifies appropriate city officials (police and fire) and prepares reports for supervisory personnel.
• Performs regular perimeter and internal patrols of hospital buildings and grounds (on foot and mobile) to prevent unauthorized entry and protect patients and property.
• Conducts investigations into hazardous conditions, reported theft, criminal activity, and other security or safety issues.
• Monitors access control systems, fire and duress alarms, and security video systems.
• Controls traffic to ensure access for emergency vehicles, patients, and visitors, including during incidents and helicopter transports.
• Maintains security of restricted areas by checking and locking doors according to schedules or special circumstances.
• Provides escorts for staff to their vehicles upon request.
• Delivers deceased bodies to the morgue and releases them to authorized persons per established policies.
• Responds to all emergency codes in accordance with department-specific guidelines.
• Alerts the department Manager of activities or deviations from standards that may require disciplinary action or follow-up.
• Enforces all hospital policies and procedures as directed.
• Maintains a professional and approachable service image to encourage individuals to seek assistance or report information.
• Conducts contraband searches for patient and employee safety as needed.
• Monitors individuals or situations to ensure safety.
• Oversees staff parking permit process and monitors compliance per policy.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED
• Successful completion of IAHSS Basic exam within 90 days of hire
• Maintain IAHSS Basic certification
• Current Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association within 9 months of hire
• Successful completion of Northwestern Medicine Defensive Tactics in Healthcare within 6 months of hire
• Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, law enforcement, and outside agencies
• Writing skills to complete reports and paperwork meeting departmental standards
• Valid driver’s license
• Physical ability and knowledge to operate a motor vehicle

Qualifications

• Experience in healthcare security, police work, or military service (preferred)
• Valid FOID card (preferred)
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (preferred)
