Security Officer - Full-time (Varied Shifts, Weekends and Holidays)

Full-time position, 80 hours bi-weekly, with varied shifts including weekends and holidays. A valid driver's license and clear driving record are required.

About the Role

Under general direction from the Safety and Security Director, Supervisor, or Lead Officer, this role ensures a safe and secure environment for hospital patients, visitors, and employees by enforcing security regulations, patrolling assigned areas, and reporting hazards or unusual occurrences. The incumbent provides protective services, responds to emergencies, and supports the day-to-day operations of the Security Department.

Responsibilities

• Provides protection to people and property through patrol, investigation, alarm monitoring, and surveillance camera oversight.
• Escorts staff, visitors, and patients as requested and apprehends criminal violators when necessary.
• Responds to emergencies, applies patient restraints as needed, and patrols buildings and grounds to identify security risks.
• Identifies unsafe conditions or improperly secured areas to prevent theft, injuries, or damages.
• Maintains strict confidentiality and conducts preliminary investigations into thefts, shortages, or potential criminal misconduct.
• Prepares and submits accurate, timely written reports and logs all incidents and responses.
• Ensures safekeeping of valuables, property, and evidence, and maintains proper documentation.
• Assists with morgue releases, ensures medical record checklists for expired patients, and supports tissue recovery teams.
• Monitors CCTV and Access Control systems, secures helicopter landing areas, and escorts medical personnel.
• Acts as a first responder to HazMat incidents, controls pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and assists workplace violence victims.
• Creates safety awareness among patients, visitors, and staff and participates in quality improvement initiatives.
• Troubleshoots parking gate machines and maintains hospital-issued uniforms and equipment.
• Manages visitor entry, maintains safe visitation, and performs a wide range of customer services.
• Performs other duties as assigned, including working varied shifts as necessary.

Requirements

• Minimum of a high school diploma required; 1-3 years of security or related experience preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland driver’s license (or valid license from state of residence) with no violations within the previous 3 years, including DUI, reckless driving, or felony convictions.
• Must pass a criminal background check.
• Must obtain and maintain the following certifications:
  • De-Escalation Training (within first 6 months of employment).
  • International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) Basic Officer Certification (within first 90 days).
  • CPR certification (within first 90 days).
• Demonstrates proper use of equipment, supplies, and security vehicles within the first 90 days.
• Communicates clearly and professionally via radio and understands computer equipment while maintaining confidentiality.
• Adheres to department/hospital policies, fire safety procedures, and wears appropriate protective equipment during patient interactions.
• Washes hands after every patient interaction and follows all safety-related policies.
• Within the first 6 months, demonstrates the ability to de-escalate anxious or aggressive individuals and manage high-volume activity.

Patient Contact

Must demonstrate knowledge of and ability to provide appropriate care for patients across all age groups, including:

• Neonate (0–30 days)
• Infant (31 days–12 months)
• Child (13 months–12 years)
• Adolescent (13–17 years)
• Adult (18–65 years)
• Geriatric (66+ years)

Must assess and interpret patient data to identify age-specific needs and provide care in accordance with department policies.

Physical Requirements

• Light Work: Lifting up to 20 pounds infrequently (less than once every three minutes) and/or carrying up to 10 pounds. Requires walking or standing for about six hours per day.
• Ergonomic Risk Factors:
  • Repetition: Repeating motions may cause stress on muscles and tendons.
  • Forceful Exertion: Physical effort required for tasks such as moving patients or equipment.
• Working Conditions: Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens (Category B – may have exposure to blood or body fluids).

Pay

Hourly range: $18.00 – $25.60, based on experience, skills, and education. Part-time positions are pro-rated based on scheduled hours. Shift differential and overtime pay may apply for non-exempt positions.
