Security Officer - Full-time (Varied Shifts, Weekends and Holidays)

Full-time position, 80 hours bi-weekly, with varied shifts including weekends and holidays. A valid driver's license and clear driving record are required.

About the Role

Under general direction from the Safety and Security Director, Supervisor, or Lead Officer, this role ensures a safe and secure environment for hospital patients, visitors, and employees by enforcing security regulations, patrolling assigned areas, and reporting hazards or unusual occurrences. The incumbent provides protective services, responds to emergencies, and supports the day-to-day operations of the Security Department.

Responsibilities

• Provides protection to people and property through patrol, investigation, alarm monitoring, and surveillance camera oversight.
• Escorts staff, visitors, and patients as requested; apprehends criminal violators when necessary.
• Responds to emergencies, applies patient restraints, and patrols buildings and grounds to identify security risks.
• Identifies unsafe conditions or improperly secured areas to prevent theft, injuries, or property damage.
• Maintains confidentiality and conducts preliminary investigations into thefts, shortages, or criminal misconduct.
• Prepares and submits accurate, timely written reports and logs all incidents and responses.
• Manages accountability for valuables, property, and evidence, ensuring proper documentation and safekeeping.
• Assists with morgue releases, ensures medical record checklists for expired patients, and supports tissue recovery teams.
• Monitors CCTV and Access Control systems; secures helicopter landing areas and escorts medical personnel.
• Acts as a first responder to HazMat incidents, workplace violence, and medical emergencies; controls pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
• Creates safety awareness among patients, visitors, and staff; participates in quality improvement initiatives.
• Troubleshoots parking gate machines and maintains hospital-issued uniforms and equipment.
• Manages visitor entry, ensures safe visitation, and provides customer service.
• May be required to work additional shifts as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required; 1–3 years of security or related experience preferred.
• Valid Maryland driver’s license (or valid license from state of residence) with no violations (DUI, reckless driving, or felony convictions) in the past 3 years.
• Must pass a criminal background check.
• Must obtain and maintain the following certifications within specified timeframes:
  • De-Escalation Training (within first 6 months).
  • International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) Basic Officer Certification (within first 90 days).
  • CPR certification (within first 90 days).
• Demonstrates proper use of equipment (e.g., radios, security vehicles, patient restraints, computers) within 90 days.
• Adheres to hospital and department policies, including fire safety, protective equipment use, and hand hygiene.
• Ability to de-escalate anxious or aggressive individuals and manage high-volume activity within 6 months.

Patient Contact

Physical Requirements

• Light work: Infrequent lifting up to 20 pounds and/or carrying up to 10 pounds; significant walking or standing (about 6 hours daily).
• Ergonomic risks: Repetitive motions, forceful exertions (e.g., moving patients), and varied postures.

Working Conditions

Category B exposure risk to bloodborne pathogens (may involve exposure to blood or body fluids).

Pay

Hourly range: $18.00 – $25.60, based on experience, skills, and education. Part-time salaries are pro-rated. Shift differentials and overtime may apply for non-exempt positions.
