Security Engineer, Specialized Business Services Cryptography

About the role

The Specialized Businesses Security (SBS) team at Amazon is responsible for the security of Amazon devices and their connected backend services, including Alexa, Kindle, Fire TV, network systems such as Kuiper and Sidewalk, and Ring devices like video doorbells, cameras, and lighting. The SBS Cryptography (DS-Crypto) team sets the strategic direction for cryptography use within SBS through research, development, training, and consultation.

As a Crypto Security Engineer, you will design, analyze, review, and implement cryptographic solutions for devices and cloud services. You will own key deliverables, extend existing systems, and build new ones from scratch while collaborating with cryptographers, security engineers, and applied scientists. You will also develop guidance and training materials on secure cryptography use for software builders.

This is a high-visibility, fast-paced role where you will directly impact customer experience and Amazon’s bottom line. The team has ambitious goals to build high-impact cryptography solutions and deliver exceptional products.

Responsibilities

• Gather and analyze business and functional requirements, translating them into technical design specifications.
• Design, review, and analyze cryptographic solutions for devices and cloud services.
• Collaborate with software development engineers to implement cryptographic solutions.
• Ensure high-quality, efficient, testable, and maintainable code in collaboration with development teams.
• Solve technical problems, meet product objectives, and develop best practices.
• Track and report key performance metrics to drive improvements and achieve outcomes on time.
• Serve as a technical resource for builders in Specialized Business teams throughout the cryptography-related software development lifecycle.
• Work in an agile development environment.
• Research advances in cryptographic standards and algorithms (e.g., post-quantum cryptography, homomorphic encryption, lightweight cryptography, security protocols).
• Build or partner with teams to develop new cryptographic technologies when needed.
• Provide cryptographic expertise for consultative design exploration and security reviews.
• Develop and lead training classes to advance SBS’s cryptography and security knowledge.

Requirements

• 3+ years of scripting, programming, and security code review in a common programming language (non-internship).
• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or 3+ years of IT Security experience.
• 3+ years of non-internship professional experience developing cryptographic solutions.
• 3+ years of experience leading the design, architecture, and implementation of systems using cryptographic algorithms, public-key infrastructure, and hardware security modules.
• 3+ years of threat modeling for cryptographic solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in any combination of: threat modeling, secure coding, identity management, authentication, software development, cryptography, system administration, or network security.
• Experience with AWS products and services.
• 3+ years of full software development lifecycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Master’s degree in computer science or equivalent.
• Familiarity with post-quantum cryptographic algorithms and public-key cryptography.
• Experience developing security protocols from public standards or academic papers.

• USA, CA, Sunnyvale: $166,600.00 - $212,800.00 USD annually
• USA, NY, New York: $159,300.00 - $212,800.00 USD annually
• USA, VA, Herndon: $159,300.00 - $202,400.00 USD annually
• USA, WA, Seattle: $159,300.00 - $202,400.00 USD annually
