Section Chief of Otolaryngology
About the role
Transform healthcare by diagnosing and treating human disease, illness and injuries while practicing evidence-based medicine. Prescribe medically necessary medications and treatments. Serve on various Carilion and/or hospital committees. Complete necessary documentation for patients' health information records. Deliver high-quality, compassionate medical care.
Responsibilities
- Examine patients using various medical equipment, instruments and tests.
- Order or perform various tests, analyses and imaging to provide information on patients' conditions.
- Diagnose patients' conditions based on examination, test and report results.
- Prescribe and administer drugs, treatments and vaccinations.
- May perform perinatal care, deliveries, surgeries and related invasive procedures.
- Work closely with case management, nursing, and the medical staff to ensure all patients have an appropriate plan of care and ongoing care coordination.
- Support Joint Commission continuous readiness and compliance.
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives with hospital management, the medical staff, and employees in areas like equipment and supply standardization, medical resource management, and evidence-based medicine.
- Complete all required documentation timely and accurately.
- Report births, deaths, and contagious diseases as required.
- Conduct, cooperate, support, and collaborate on basic and clinical research.
- Develop and test new medical techniques.
- Supervise medical treatment of patients.
- Supervise physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, medical residents, medical students, and/or office staff.
- Participate in teaching and mentoring activities.
Requirements
This role requires a strong foundation in medicine, including diagnostic and therapeutic skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment. Candidates must be licensed to practice medicine in the United States and possess a relevant medical degree.
Qualifications
Must have completed medical school and residency training. Must be board certified or board eligible in the relevant medical specialty. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Skills
Strong diagnostic and therapeutic skills, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential. Proficiency in medical equipment and technology is also required.
