About the Role

The Department of Pediatrics at Dartmouth Health Children’s and The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth seeks an exceptional neonatologist to lead its Section of Neonatology. The Section hosts the first neonatal intensive care unit in New Hampshire, the Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon. We seek candidates with leadership experience and a passion for advancing perinatal care within a complex regional system.

Dartmouth Health Children’s is the pediatric service of Dartmouth Health (DH), an integrated academic healthcare system anchored by DHMC, recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the Best Hospital in New Hampshire. DHMC supports over 50 graduate medical education programs, including a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship, and is home to CHaD—New Hampshire’s only children’s hospital and the flagship for Dartmouth Health Children’s. The system provides primary, specialty, and advanced tertiary pediatric services, including an inpatient pediatric unit with a PICU.

Dartmouth Health Children’s is committed to addressing inequities that prevent children and adolescents from living their healthiest lives. The Section of Neonatology includes 7 neonatologists and over a dozen advanced practice providers who care for infants in the ICN, a 30-bed Level IV NICU (the highest acuity in the state). All services are available on-site except cardiac surgery and ECMO, which are provided through partner programs in Boston.

DHMC is the primary referral center for high-risk maternal-fetal care in the region, serving patients from most of New Hampshire and eastern Vermont. Approximately half of the ICN’s patients are outborn from a primarily rural region, supported by a robust telemedicine system for emergent care and consultation. An emerging partnership with the Level III NICU at Elliot Hospital in Manchester will create a regional neonatology program, a key focus for the next Section Chief.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Section of Neonatology, guiding clinical, educational, and research initiatives.
• Oversee care delivery in the 30-bed NICU, including high-acuity cases and regional referrals.
• Develop and strengthen partnerships, including the emerging collaboration with Elliot Hospital’s NICU.
• Teach and mentor Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellows, pediatric residents, and medical students.
• Advance academic opportunities, including quality improvement (as a founding member of the Vermont Oxford Network), health services research (in partnership with The Dartmouth Institute), global health, and clinical research.
• Maintain an active clinical practice while fulfilling leadership and administrative duties.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited medical school.
• Board-certified MD with 5+ years of healthcare leadership experience.
• Licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice medicine in New Hampshire.
• Desire to continue active clinical practice in neonatology.
• Proven ability to manage relationships with physicians, administrators, staff, and the public with tact and discretion.
• Strong communication and presentation skills for engaging providers, staff, and external stakeholders.
