Carter G. Woodson School | Winston-Salem, NC Position: Full-Time | Reports To: Principal/Director of Academics Carter G. Woodson School is seeking a dedicated Second Grade Teacher who helps scholars strengthen their skills, develop independence, and grow through challenging and supportive instruction. Position Overview The Second Grade Teacher provides standards-based instruction in literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies. This position emphasizes reading accuracy and fluency, comprehension, written expression, mathematical reasoning, and independent learning habits. Key Responsibilities Plan and deliver instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.Strengthen phonics, word recognition, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.Teach scholars to organize ideas and develop clear written responses and connected paragraphs.Build understanding of place value, addition, subtraction, measurement, and mathematical problem-solving.Use assessments and classroom observations to monitor progress and adjust instruction.Provide differentiated lessons, small-group instruction, and targeted interventions.Maintain a structured classroom and reinforce schoolwide SOAR expectations.Address behavioral concerns through appropriate redirection, documentation, and collaboration with families and support staff.Collaborate with exceptional children’s and English learner staff to implement required accommodations and services.Maintain accurate records and communicate regularly with families.Participate in instructional coaching, professional development, team meetings, and assigned supervision duties. Qualifications Required: Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.Valid North Carolina elementary teaching license preferred or eligibility for working towards appropriate licensure.Strong knowledge of elementary literacy and mathematics instruction.Ability to use data to plan interventions and support scholar growth.Effective classroom management, communication, and collaboration skills.Commitment to culturally responsive instruction and scholar achievement. Preferred: Three or more years of successful elementary teaching experience.Experience teaching second grade.Training in the science of reading and experience supporting varied learning needs.
