Carter G. Woodson School | Winston-Salem, NC Position: Full-Time Carter G. Woodson School is seeking a dedicated First Grade Teacher who builds strong academic foundations through engaging instruction, meaningful relationships, and clear expectations. Position Overview The First Grade Teacher provides standards-based instruction in literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies. This position emphasizes foundational reading, early writing, number sense, and the classroom habits scholars need to become confident, independent learners. Key Responsibilities Plan and deliver instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.Teach phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, and early writing.Build mathematical understanding through number sense, addition, subtraction, and problem-solving.Use assessments and classroom observations to monitor progress and adjust instruction.Provide differentiated lessons, small-group instruction, and targeted interventions.Establish consistent routines and reinforce schoolwide SOAR expectations.Address behavioral concerns through appropriate redirection, documentation, and collaboration with families and support staff.Collaborate with exceptional children’s and English learner staff to implement required accommodations and services.Maintain accurate attendance, grades, and progress records.Participate in instructional coaching, professional development, team meetings, and assigned supervision duties. Qualifications Required: Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.Valid North Carolina elementary teaching license preferred or eligibility for working towards appropriate licensure.Strong knowledge of foundational literacy and early mathematics instruction.Effective classroom management, communication, and collaboration skills.Commitment to culturally responsive instruction and scholar achievement. Preferred: Three or more years of successful elementary teaching experience.Experience teaching first grade.Training in the science of reading and experience providing reading interventions.
