About the Role

Plastering and Fireproofing entails a great deal of dexterity and speed. It involves the coating of internal walls, ceilings, and steel structures with different types of plaster and fireproofing products while maintaining the necessary production and quality required to complete a project and meet customers’ expectations.

Responsibilities

• Plaster Tasks:
  • Applies coats of plaster to interior walls, ceilings, and partitions of buildings to produce finished surfaces, according to blueprints, architect's drawings, or oral instructions, using hand tools and portable power tools.
  • Directs workers to mix plaster to desired consistency and to erect scaffolds.
  • Spreads plaster over lath or masonry base using a trowel and smooths plaster with a float to attain uniform thickness.
  • Applies scratch, brown, or finish coats of plaster to wood, metal, or board lath successively.
  • Roughens undercoat with scratcher to provide bond for succeeding coats of plaster.
  • Creates decorative textures in finish coat by marking surface with brush and trowel or by spattering surface with pebbles.
  • May apply plaster with a spray gun or nozzle.
  • Reports to lead man or foreman.
• Fireproofing Tasks:
  • Masking and cleaning of any finishes.
  • Erecting and dismantling scaffolding pertaining to fireproofing activities.
  • Setting up necessary equipment.
  • Reading and understanding structural drawings.
  • Application of fireproofing products.
  • May perform maintenance work on fireproofing equipment.
  • Reports to lead man or foreman.
• Accountability:
  • Responsible for the production and quality of installed products.
  • Ensures safety, timely production, and quality while maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Works within precise limits and standards of accuracy, including:
    • Planning work and selecting proper tools.
    • Comparing and identifying differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.
    • Visualizing solid objects from drawings or diagrams.
    • Performing a variety of duties that may change often.
    • Rating information using measurable standards.

Physical Requirements

• Climb and maintain balance on scaffolds and ladders.
• Reach for, handle, and manipulate objects and materials.
• Lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.

Pay

In the Seattle area, wages range from $33.00 per hour for entry-level apprentices to $55.00 per hour for Journeyman. Wages are determined by union scale as outlined in the current collective bargaining agreement.
