Seasonal Laborer

This is a temporary Seasonal Laborer position (Laborer 1G) in the Office of Storm Drain Maintenance, limited to a maximum of 1000 working hours. This position does not offer benefits. Applications will be capped at 100 submissions.

About The Position

These are additional staff support positions filled temporarily for the Spring Storm Season. The role involves routine unskilled manual labor of a physically demanding nature. Employees perform a wide variety of manual tasks under close supervision, though direct supervision may not always be available. Work relates to asphalt, masonry, concrete, mowing, flood control, litter control, tree maintenance, turf, and grounds maintenance on County rights-of-way and at County facilities. Hours vary based on department needs and weather conditions, with overtime expected as required.

Duties require initiative, independent judgment, mechanical aptitude, and coordination of eye, hand, and foot movements for the care and operation of equipment.

About The Agency

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) maintains nearly 2,000 miles of County roadways, including 900 bridges, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons, and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy areas. DPW&T’s workforce ensures the County’s infrastructure remains functional through activities such as snow and ice removal, traffic signal upgrades, streetlight installation, tree clearing, drainage maintenance, and roadway repairs ranging from potholes to bridge resurfacing.

Responsibilities

• Performs a full range of manual labor duties.
• Cleans streets, curbs, gutters, rights-of-way, sidewalks, and catch basin inlets.
• Assists in tree, turf, and grounds maintenance on County rights-of-way and facilities.
• Assists in construction, repair, and patching of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins, barriers, and fences.
• Removes trash, leaves, and debris from County property.
• Acts as a traffic flag person.
• Moves and arranges furniture as directed.
• Cleans and maintains tools and equipment.
• Loads and unloads vehicles.
• Performs unskilled, limited skilled, and skilled tasks related to asphalt, masonry, concrete, mowing, flood, and litter control.
• Uses hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment for various manual tasks.
• Operates equipment safely, adhering to protocols to protect crew members and the public.
• Drives crew cab trucks to transport personnel and materials to and from job sites, performing pre/post-trip inspections.
• Operates power mowers (push and self-propelled), roto-tillers, weedeaters, chainsaws, and other maintenance equipment.
• Performs litter pickup, signage removal, and other productive tasks when not assigned to normal crew duties.
• Performs additional tasks within the general occupational category as needed.
• Wears appropriate safety gear daily, including safety vests, protective eyewear, hard hats, steel-toed boots, and gloves, while observing safety rules.

Required Emergency Operations

• Participates as an essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency activities.
• Assists with the removal and attachment of plow blades and pins in preparation for weather emergencies.
• Responds promptly to assigned tasks during inclement weather or emergency conditions.
• Operates 4x4 trucks with blades and spreaders for snow removal.
• Effectively removes snow and ice from assigned areas, adjusting operations based on weather and road conditions.
• Reads maps to ensure assigned areas are plowed in the correct order without missed roads.
• Removes snow from sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, applying sand or salt to icy areas as directed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of six (6) school grades. An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
