The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking a highly qualified applicant to fill a Seasonal CDL Operator position (Equipment Operator 1G) in the Office of Storm Drain Maintenance. This is a temporary position limited to a maximum of 1,000 working hours and does not offer benefits. Applications will be capped at 100 submissions.

About The Position

These are additional staff support positions filled temporarily for the Spring Storm Season. This is skilled craft work involving the safe and efficient operation of light equipment and/or motor vehicles. Incumbents perform manual tasks related to road construction, highway maintenance, storm drain maintenance, and/or landfill operations. Assignments are outlined in detail by a supervisor, and standard procedures are followed. Duties require initiative, independent judgment, mechanical aptitude, and skillful coordination of eye, hand, and foot movements.

About The Agency

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) maintains nearly 2,000 miles of County roadways, including 900 bridges, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, stormwater management facilities, and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy areas. DPW&T’s workforce performs activities such as snow and ice removal, traffic signal upgrades, streetlight installation, tree clearing, drainage maintenance, and roadway repairs ranging from potholes to bridge resurfacing.

Responsibilities

• Operates light equipment such as street sweepers, bucket trucks, chippers, street flushers, belt loaders, sandblasters, rubber tire rollers, compressor trucks, rubber tire loaders, mist/straw blowers, stump removers, dump trucks (6-wheel), and 20-yard packers.
• Operates dump trucks (single axle) and crew cab dump trucks (single axle) to transport personnel and materials to and from job sites, assisting in loading and unloading.
• Operates air compressors, five-ton rollers, asphalt curb machines, tractor mowers, and flail mowers for construction or maintenance projects.
• Participates in work-site safety set-up, including setting barricades and cones, prepping for excavation, assisting with utility locates, and prepping for confined space entry.
• Uses traffic control techniques to manage vehicular traffic; maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles.
• Maintains records and prepares reports by completing daily work logs and work order forms.
• Performs daily vehicle checks, including interior/exterior cleaning, tire and air pressure inspection, and engine/hydraulic fluid level adjustments.
• Conducts pre- and post-trip inspections to ensure equipment is in safe operating condition and assists crew members with semi-skilled tasks.
• Assists with preventive maintenance.

Required Emergency Operations

• Participates as an essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities.
• Assists Tool Room staff with the removal and attachment of plow blades and pins in preparation for weather emergencies.
• Promptly responds to assigned tasks during inclement weather or emergency conditions.
• Operates 4x4 trucks with blades and spreaders during snow removal operations.
• Operates equipment with spreaders and/or snowplows to remove snow and ice from assigned areas.
• Safely operates vehicles/equipment according to weather and road conditions.
• Accurately reads maps to confirm assigned areas are plowed in proper order.
• Removes snow from County sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and other areas, then applies sand and/or salt to icy areas as directed.

Requirements

• Completion of a standard grade school course.
• One (1) year of experience operating light power equipment.
• A valid Class A, Class B, or equivalent commercial driver's license (CDL) with mandatory endorsements is required upon appointment.
• Must successfully complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment associated with this role.
• Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical exam.

The salary range reflects the offer range for this position, with offers based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity. Tentative interview dates are August 17, 2026 – August 21, 2026, subject to change. Only selected candidates will receive confirmation and additional details.

Job locations include Forestville, Glendale, or Brandywine facilities.
