Seasonal Assistant Coach - Women's Lightweight Crew

About the Role

Under the direction of the Head Coach, this position uses athletics as a tool to educate college students. By using intercollegiate competition and related activities, the role serves as a teacher and mentor to help build student character, prepare students for constructive lives, and teach valuable life lessons such as work ethic, discipline, resilience, teamwork, goal-setting, and leadership. This position assists in planning, directing, and coaching the women’s intercollegiate lightweight crew program, typically working with all student-athletes in the program.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing student-athlete skills, planning and executing practices, supporting in-game management, and coordinating team programming.
• Help the team perform at competitive levels, with a focus on developing skills for a portion of student-athletes.
• Generate enthusiasm and effectively communicate with students through credible coaching.
• Assist in analyzing video for scouting opponents and team development.
• Support on-campus recruiting and retention of talent, fostering team enthusiasm while adhering to values of excellence and inclusion. Note: This position is not eligible for off-campus recruiting.
• Support a culture of education through athletics and assist in academic integration with the team, as appropriate.
• Lead the novice program in the fall and assist with the varsity team in the spring.
• Recruit current Harvard students with strong athletic potential to the novice program.
• Manage student-athlete eligibility with Harvard Athletics Compliance and Sports Medicine staff.
• Introduce new student-athletes to the sport of rowing and develop/execute a training plan for novice athletes.
• Organize and lead novice practices Monday-Friday and occasional Saturdays in the fall.
• Provide technical skill instruction and feedback, and evaluate novice athletes' potential for the varsity team.
• Communicate regularly with varsity coaches about novice development.
• Ensure the safety of all student-athletes and maintain compliance with Harvard, Ivy League, and NCAA rules and regulations.
• Travel to winter training trips to assist with varsity team coaching.
• Integrate stand-out novice student-athletes into the varsity team.
• Attend winter and spring varsity practices and races, assisting with coaching, logistics, athlete development, and equipment maintenance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant experience.
• At least 1 year of lightweight rowing coaching and/or rowing experience at the club, collegiate, national, or professional/Olympic level.
• Substantial sport-specific knowledge and understanding of relevant issues.
• Understanding of the philosophy, principles, and policies of Harvard and Ivy League athletics, including the University Conflict of Interest and Commitment policy.
• Valid driver’s license.
• CPR and First Aid certification required.

Schedule

This is a seasonal position working 17 hours per week during the in-season, championship segments of the women’s lightweight crew varsity sport season. This typically includes August through November and February through May.

Pay

The pay range for this position is a bi-weekly rate of $1,000 - $1,400 based on qualifications and years of experience.

Working Conditions

• Some evening and weekend work required.
• Work in extreme environmental conditions, including extreme heat and cold, rain, and high levels of noise.
• Must be able to lift equipment associated with the sport.
