Science Teacher (Grades 7-8)

About the role

For over 50 years, Lawrence has delivered academic excellence to students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and ADHD. Through continuous on-site training and professional development, our faculty become true experts in how students process information.

Responsibilities

• Prepare thoroughly for each assigned period to ensure content is presented in a structured, systematic way and skill deficits are remediated appropriately.
• Utilize specialized Lawrence School instructional methodology and multisensory approaches following appropriate training.
• Maintain a highly structured classroom environment that minimizes disruptions and supports all students' unique learning needs.
• Follow Assertive Discipline in responding to student behavior and seek assistance from the Campus Leadership Council when situations are intense or ambiguous.
• Integrate diverse learning strategies and adapt classroom technology to enhance the learning experience.
• Perform assigned teacher duties (lunch, activity, etc.) consistently and ensure administrative staff has accurate, up-to-date attendance info daily.
• Input grades into the database weekly, ensuring the current week’s grades are posted for viewing by parents by Friday.
• Complete biweekly curriculum maps to plan academic skills instruction, executive function support, and assessments.
• Complete all assigned reports (IEP progress reports, grade reports, etc.) thoroughly and promptly.
• Review and recommend updates to Student Learning Plans; report any case of suspected child abuse or neglect to the Head of Upper School, Division Directors, or Head of School on the same day received.
• Communicate effectively and frequently with the Campus Leadership Council on issues related to students, parents, or school operations.
• Follow up on parent contacts within 24 hours.
• Prepare for and participate in parent conference events (November and March) and special meetings related to assigned students.
• Support the mission of Lawrence School.
• Treat each student, co-worker, parent, and community member with consistent respect and actively seeks opportunities for cooperation and collaboration.
• Maintain accurate records; complete and submit required paperwork to the proper office according to the deadline.
• Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Science Education or a related field; teaching certification is required.

ODEW Teacher certification required. (Intervention Specialist K-12 preferred; Non-tax certification considered).

An intrinsic desire to celebrate students who learn differently, relate to their experiences, and honor their perspectives.

Experience in teaching and engaging with middle school students.

Key Skills & Knowledge

• Proficiency in lesson planning and curriculum development tailored to diverse learning needs.
• Strong communication skills and good classroom management.
• Familiarity with instructional strategies for students with learning differences (multisensory, differentiated instruction).
• Experience with classroom technology and a passion/patience for neurodiverse learners.

Schedule

Ten-month position following the academic calendar. The workload extends beyond 8:15 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. to include planning, grading, and professional development regardless of contract hours.

• Mondays: 8:15 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
• Tuesday–Friday: 8:15 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.
