About the Role
The Armed School Officer serves as a security enforcement officer, educator, and mentor within the assigned school environment, ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and property while fostering a safe and supportive learning atmosphere.
Responsibilities
- Greet students, visitors, and staff warmly and professionally; provide information, directions, and assistance as needed.
- Collaborate with school administration, teachers, counselors, and local law enforcement to address safety and security concerns.
- Control entrances and monitor pedestrian and vehicle traffic; manage access to the school building.
- Verify identification and maintain visitor logs.
- Operate and monitor surveillance equipment to ensure premises security.
- Respond to alarms and incidents, assess situations, and take appropriate action; coordinate with emergency services if necessary.
- Conduct regular patrols of the building and surrounding areas to ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Document and report all incidents, suspicious activities, and security-related concerns.
- Maintain clear communication with students, staff, and management regarding security matters.
- Manage conflicts and disturbances calmly and professionally.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development related to security and school-related functions.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor for students, building relationships and providing guidance.
Requirements
- Current OPOTA license.
- Must be 25+ years old (21+ if applicant has previous military or law enforcement experience).
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.
- Experience in a school setting is a plus.
- Strong observational and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- First Aid and CPR certification is desirable.
- Ability to stand for extended periods, walk, and perform physical tasks as needed.
- Ability to work flexible hours, potentially including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to see, hear, speak, and write clearly to communicate with employees and others.
- Pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting up to 50 lbs.; stair climbing, walking, and standing for extended periods.
- Normal or corrected vision (glasses/contacts) for reading and viewing abilities.
- General computer knowledge and ability to adapt to software easily.
