About the Role

The School Registered Nurse provides comprehensive, continuous, coordinated, and individualized nursing care to all students in the Ennis School District and Madison Valley Medical Center patients as needed. This role requires collaboration with Ennis School personnel, ancillary departments, and medical staff to deliver patient/student-centered care, aligned with the mission and values of MVMC.

Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

  • Independently perform focused assessments to provide effective patient care.
  • Accurately assess patient/family readiness to learn, organize, and execute individualized patient teaching plans, and evaluate understanding.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate patient plans of care, adapting as the patient’s condition changes.
  • Complete and maintain computerized and paper documentation, logs, and electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Perform other nursing and related hospital duties as necessary.
  • Attend departmental meetings, seminars, and training as designated.
  • Maintain appropriate attendance for shifts and on-call responsibilities.
  • Communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Understand and adhere to MVMC policies and procedures, and utilize the Nursing Process.
  • Use computers for basic functions such as Time and Attendance, Email, Internet, and EMR.
  • Act as a patient advocate, including family/patient teaching.
  • Maintain skills to provide safe and quality care, seeking independent education opportunities.
  • Adhere to high standards of personal and professional conduct.
  • Resolve workplace issues constructively and respond positively to change.
  • Contribute to a safe environment for patients and staff by following procedures and protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

School Nurse Responsibilities

  • Provide health services to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by removing health-related barriers to learning.
  • Promote optimal wellness through preventive health services for students’ physical, mental, emotional, and social growth.
  • Manage student health care plans, chronic conditions, and identify potential disabilities, facilitating referrals as needed.
  • Advocate for safety by participating in school safety plans addressing bullying, violence, and emergencies.
  • Triage clinical care for students and staff based on assessments, implementing first aid as needed.
  • Assume responsibility for health planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and referrals.
  • Implement and record required screening programs, notifying parents when further evaluation is needed.
  • Establish and update health and immunization records, and prepare required reports.
  • Administer daily and PRN medications and nursing care as prescribed by physicians.
  • Initiate emergency procedures for students and staff.
  • Develop Individual Health Care Plans on a case-by-case basis.
  • Teach medical procedures for evaluating and maintaining medically involved students.
  • Present and maintain infectious disease standards regarding bloodborne pathogens and exposure risks.
  • Provide health education and counseling.
  • Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
  • Act as a liaison between the school, family, and community health care providers.
  • Coordinate health care presentations for parents and staff.
  • Maintain health equipment and supplies.
  • Follow the same daily schedule as Ennis School District certified staff and abide by district policies.

Requirements

  • Current Montana RN License.
  • BLS certification (required upon hire).
  • Annual Safety Training and N-95 Mask Fitting.
  • Basic working knowledge of PC skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years’ experience practicing as an RN.
  • Experience in community health, clinic, or school settings.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Extensive standing and walking, with occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull at least 50 pounds.
  • Very good close vision and ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Some risk of radiation exposure and electrical shock.
  • Work in a clean hospital environment with quiet to moderate noise levels.
  • Frequent keyboarding and repetitive movements.

OSHA Category I: Employee will have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of routine job duties.
