The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

The School of Nursing offers five types of Graduate Assistantships: Teaching Associate, Instructional Assistant, Research Assistant, Clinical Assistant, and Office Assistant. Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA)

• Teaches undergraduate courses as Instructor of Record.
• Full responsibility for a course, including leading the class and assigning grades.
• Might lead discussion sections, grade papers and exams, or supervise laboratory sections.
• Requires completion of at least 18 graduate credit hours in the instructional discipline.
• Cannot teach graduate-level courses.

Graduate Instructional Assistant (GIA)

• Aids with grading and other administrative responsibilities related to a course.
• Might be listed in the schedule for labs, recitations, tutorials, etc.
• Works under the direct supervision of the faculty member who is instructor of record.
• Participates in pre-service training and receives regular in-service training as well as planned, periodic evaluations.

Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)

• Supports faculty members in their research activities.
• Varies by discipline and lab, including tasks like data collection, entry, and analysis; reviewing the literature; writing reports; copying, filing, and collating; organizing and/or cleaning the lab or office.

Graduate Clinical Assistant (GCA)

• Taught, researched, or practiced under the supervision of or in collaboration with a member of the graduate faculty.
• May be assigned case-loads, group counseling, crisis intervention, outreach programming, personality assessments, maintaining clinical records, or other clinical duties as assigned.

Graduate Office Assistant (GOA)

• Staffs an open laboratory, studio, or workshop, where students complete assignments or work on projects.
• Provides non-graded, individual instruction or tutoring.
• Helps faculty prepare and manage classroom materials.
• May perform academic duties such as assisting in non-central roles of faculty research.
• May be assigned to a wide variety of other responsibilities that are not related to instructional or research processes but support the mission of the University.

Qualifications

• Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
• Enrolled full-time, generally a minimum of 9 credits.
• Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
• Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
