About the role

The School Nutrition Assistant provides support to food service activities at an assigned location, with responsibilities for preparing and serving food items to students and/or school personnel and maintaining food service facilities in a safe and sanitary condition. This job reports to the School Nutrition Director.

Responsibilities

  • Attends in-service training and workshops to gather information required to perform job functions.
  • Cleans and sanitizes linens, utensils, equipment, storage, food preparation, serving, and eating areas to maintain sanitary conditions and meet health and safety requirements.
  • Evaluates prepared food for flavor, appearance, and temperature to ensure acceptance by students and staff.
  • Inspects food items and supplies to verify quantity, quality, and specifications, and to comply with mandated health standards.
  • Inventories food, condiments, and supplies to ensure availability for projected menu requirements.
  • Maintains accurate records and reports (e.g., leftovers, opened cans, student lunch balances, money collection and reconciliation, informing students of lunch balances) for State, Federal, and administrative requirements.
  • Maintains equipment, storage, food preparation, and serving areas in a sanitary condition to comply with health standards.
  • Merchandises food and beverage items for efficient service to students and staff.
  • Monitors kitchen and cafeteria areas (e.g., time/temperature logs, employee safety, working procedures) to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
  • Oversees the preparation, cooking, and serving of food (including special diets and allergy accommodations) to provide high-quality, nutritious meals.
  • Performs functions of other nutritional service positions (e.g., cashiering) as requested to ensure adequate staff coverage.
  • Prepares food and beverage items according to standardized recipes and established procedures (e.g., ready-to-eat, cold-held, hot-held foods) to meet nutritional and meal requirements.
  • Receives food items and supplies, placing them in designated areas following temperature and spoilage guidelines.
  • Reports needed supplies and equipment malfunctions to the Nutrition Manager.
  • Serves the appropriate number of food items to meet nutritional requirements and student/staff requests.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Job-related experience is desired.
  • Skills required include:
    • Adhering to safety practices.
    • Preparing and maintaining accurate records.
    • Utilizing industrial-grade food service equipment and pertinent software applications.
    • Operating standard office equipment and kitchen tools.
  • Knowledge required includes:
    • Basic math (fractions, percents, ratios).
    • Methods of quantity cooking and health standards.
    • Food safe handling procedures and meal planning.
    • Managing high-volume food preparation operations.
    • Job-related codes, laws, regulations, and policies.
    • Industrial cleaning methods.
  • Abilities required include:
    • Scheduling activities and meetings.
    • Gathering, collating, and classifying data.
    • Working with diverse individuals and as part of a team.
    • Communicating with persons of diverse backgrounds.
    • Maintaining confidentiality and meeting deadlines.
    • Organizing tasks and setting priorities.
    • Working around children.
  • Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and fine finger dexterity. The job requires 0% sitting, 25% walking, and 75% standing, and is performed under minimal temperature variations with some exposure to risk of injury or illness.

Pay

$17.70 - $30.20/hour. Benefit eligible.
