Provides skilled nursing care and management of the special needs of students, including medication administration, immunization surveillance, and routine health screenings. Offers emergency care for students and staff, and refers students to primary healthcare providers when necessary. Acts as a liaison for students with complex medical needs, coordinating between school, home, and medical facilities. Interprets medical data and contributes to health plans for students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs). Promotes student wellness and maintains a healthy school environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides emergency medical care to students.
  • Administers and/or supervises the administration of prescription medication to students.
  • Counsels and/or educates students individually or in small groups on medical issues.
  • Conducts formal and informal evaluations of medical conditions and develops accurate medical summaries.
  • Teaches mini-courses on medical/health topics to small groups of students.
  • Monitors and assesses compliance with immunization standards per BPS and DPH regulations.
  • Performs vision, hearing, scoliosis, dental, and other health-related screenings as required.
  • Develops and maintains contacts with medical professionals or facilities for direct service or consultation.
  • Participates in Service Team Meetings when medical input or consultation is needed.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate record-keeping and reporting procedures.
  • Conducts workshops or training for staff as appropriate.
  • Maintains updated health records.
  • Serves as medical representative at evaluations and re-evaluations, interpreting medical data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Massachusetts license as a Registered Nurse.
  • MA State Dept. of Education School Nurse License (All Levels).
  • CPR & First Aid Certification.
  • Ability to meet BPS Standards of Effective Practice.
  • Experience working with children and adolescents in public school, agency, or human services settings.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in school support services, liaison and case management, or working with high-risk, multi-problem children and adolescents.
  • Fluency in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.
