School Nurse (Part-time) - Post High Program - 2026-27 School Year

About the Role

The school nurse implements the school health program, supports student well-being, and completes health-related tasks in a part-time role (50%, 3.63 hours/day) for the 2026-27 school year. Starting pay is based on qualifications as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN).

Responsibilities

• Maintains student health records, reviews immunization records, and ensures compliance with School Health Entrance Requirements.
• Informs administrators and staff about student health issues while complying with medical privacy regulations.
• Administers medication with parental permission and a doctor’s order; trains staff for medication administration in the nurse’s absence or during field trips.
• Supplies and maintains the school clinic, including securing controlled substances.
• Assists sick or injured students and staff, performs first aid, and manages infectious illness outbreaks with input from health officials.
• Refers health concerns to counselors, psychologists, physicians, or other appropriate parties.
• Serves as a liaison with the public health department and community agencies.
• Conducts mandated hearing and vision screenings; refers students for follow-up.
• Provides guidance to staff on health procedures for students with special needs; assists with personal comfort and movement.
• Trains or supervises unlicensed personnel to provide necessary health care.
• Ensures compliance with laws requiring trained staff for diabetes care (insulin/glucagon administration) and IDEA legislation for medical procedures.
• Develops or assists with Individual Health Care Plans for students with medical conditions, including allergies; educates staff on emergency protocols.
• Ensures confidentiality of medical information and obtains written consent for sharing information.
• Serves on the School Crisis Team and provides health-related counseling sensitive to students’ needs.
• Assists in special activities, fire drills, and field trips; performs clerical duties related to school nurse functions.
• Advises administrators on interventions to meet student needs and educates staff on food allergies and epinephrine administration.
• Performs other health-related duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.

Requirements

• Valid license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN); Registered Nurse (RN) preferred.
• Minimum of two years of supervised nursing experience in community health or pediatric nursing.
• Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from a recognized provider (e.g., American Heart Association).
• Familiarity with basic keyboarding skills.
• Satisfactory health condition as certified by a medical authority.

• Skill in making physical, social, and emotional assessments and implementing nursing interventions.

Work Environment

Duties are performed in a school clinic and other settings (classrooms, gym, cafeteria, recreational areas). Frequent movement throughout the school is required. Occasional lifting of objects up to 40 pounds and assisting students weighing up to 150 pounds with assistive equipment may be necessary. The role involves potential exposure to injury or illness.
