School Nurse- Holy Name Catholic School

Position Responsibilities

Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school.

Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Serves as health advocate for students.

Notifies parents of accident or illness and secures medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).

Collaborates with school administration, families, and community resources to address health-related attendance concerns and promote regular school attendance.

Maintain confidentiality regarding school matters.

Adheres to safety training and protocols on a daily basis, and takes precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of self, others.

Monitor and track student attendance, identifying patterns of absenteeism and chronic absenteeism that may impact student health and academic success.

Coordinate and complete all state-required student health screenings, including vision, hearing, scoliosis, and acanthosis nigricans, in accordance with Texas Department of State Health Services guidelines.

Notify parents/guardians of screening results and required follow-up when a student does not pass a screening, maintain accurate health records, and complete all required annual state reporting in a timely and compliant manner.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Nursing Services

Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols.

Serve as health advocate for students.

Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).

Cookordinate management system to administer medications to students at school.

Administer medications according to school policy and procedures.

Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs.

Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.

Instruction

Participate in development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.

Educate faculty and staff as needed on health related topics.

Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students or classes.

Consultation

Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.

Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.

Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.

Communicate regularly with principal, school counselor, teachers, parents, food services, and other staff regarding health.

Administration

Review and evaluate immunization records.

Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.

Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.

Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rules, and school policy in health services area.

Report potential health and safety hazards to principal.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or GED required
• License and Credentials: Registered Nurse, RN, licensed to practice in the state of Texas OR Licensed Vocational Nurse, LVN, in the state of Texas is under the clinical supervision of a School Nurse Consultant
• Experience: Two years nursing experience, preferably in community
• Licenses and Credentials: Reliable transportation, Valid driver license, Valid vehicle insurance, Ability to obtain Certification for CPR/AED, a state vision, hearing, spinal, and acanthosis nirgricans screener
• Background Screening: Must pass archdiocesan Safe Environment Requirements and background screening, Must pass Texas DPS Fingerprint-based Applicant Clearinghouse screening

Minimum Knowledge And Skills:

• Knowledge: Minimum of two years nursing experience, preferably in community
• Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, Ability to implement policies and procedures, Must be detail oriented, organized, self-motivated, work well independently and on a team, Must have good written and verbal skills, Must have good critical thinking and problem-solving skills
