One City Schools is a Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization providing high-quality educational opportunities for young children. Our mission is to seed a new model of public education that ensures children succeed from birth through high school graduation. We aim to eliminate persistent achievement and opportunity gaps, preparing all children to contribute and succeed as adults. Currently, we operate three schools: One City Preschool (ages 1-3), One City Elementary School (4K through 4th grade), and One City Preparatory Academy (grades 5-7, expanding to 8th grade in 2024-2025).

About the role

We are seeking an experienced, innovative, and energetic School Nurse to develop, manage, and coordinate our school's health services program. This full-time position offers competitive pay, benefits, and the opportunity to lead a positive revolution in school health.

Responsibilities

  • Develop policies, procedures, and work standards for the school health program
  • Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies; initiate program changes as needed
  • Manage program allotment efficiently and prepare health reports for supervisors, the board of education, and health department
  • Collaborate with child-support agencies in designing and providing a school health program
  • Act as a liaison between the school, home, health department professionals, and other community agencies
  • Orient staff and teach specific medical procedures for evaluating and maintaining medically involved students
  • Negotiate professional and medical services essential to the school health program
  • Provide first aid care and medically prescribed services
  • Maintain security of school health supplies
  • Provide staff development on health-related topics and coordinate presentations by agencies and professionals
  • Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect
  • Screen and conduct health appraisals for students and staff; provide follow-up evaluations
  • Recommend corrective action where problems are identified; conduct home visits when appropriate
  • Correspond with parents on health needs of children
  • Record immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data
  • Supervise University of Wisconsin-Madison nursing students during their community education practicum

Requirements

  • Strong commitment to the mission, vision, goals, and objectives of One City Schools
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited nursing program; licensed as a registered nurse in Wisconsin
  • Minimum two years of nursing experience in community health, pediatrics, emergency care, or a physician’s office
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR/AED for Healthcare Providers certification
  • Considerable knowledge of medical disorders, treatment, child growth, and development
  • Working knowledge of public health problems, treatment procedures, and relevant laws/regulations
  • Excellent judgment, communication, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive
  • Ability to stand, sit, perform repetitious movements, lift up to 50 pounds, and lift students as required
  • Stamina to stand for extended periods daily
  • Completion of a background check
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License (or ability to obtain one before start date)
  • At least 18 years of age

Compensation is market-competitive and consistent with One City’s approved compensation plan as stipulated by the Board of Directors.
