About the role
The School Nursing position at our district serves as a health professional supporting student learning. It involves coordinating health services, assessing student health, and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance student health and academic success.
Responsibilities
- Adheres to District, State, and Iowa Board of Nursing rules and regulations.
- Carefully assesses student health concerns and implements Individual Health Plans, Emergency Plans, and Evacuation Plans.
- Coordinates and ensures the delivery of school health services.
- Works as part of a multidisciplinary team to plan and evaluate support services for students.
- Provides case management and care coordination.
- Manages health office activities, including overseeing Health Secretary responsibilities.
- Delegates tasks to, trains, and supervises unlicensed personnel.
- Maintains compliance with district procedures and protocols.
- Provides health counseling and guidance to students and their families.
- Initiates and coordinates referrals to and/or linkages with health agencies.
- Collaborates with others in the school and surrounding community to improve students' health.
- Supports students' health and safety within the school setting.
- Aids staff in strategies to support and meet students' needs and academic goals.
- Uses active communication and motivational interviewing skills to build positive relationships.
- Participates in social/emotional/behavioral school-wide screening, education, and follow-up.
- Maintains appropriate records and documents according to health services procedures.
- Protects the confidentiality of data.
- Provides individual and group education to support health literacy skills.
- Provides BBP training to identified staff with Occupational Exposure.
- Learns and leads building emergency medical responders.
- Meets the Standards of School Nursing Practice and the Iowa Teaching Standards consistently.
- Participates in nurse's Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), Tier teams, and other school or district teams/groups as needed.
- Reports to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Nursing.
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Iowa Board of Nursing.
- Previous pediatric nursing, school health nursing, or community health nursing experience is preferred.

- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents, assessment data, professional journals, and regulations.
- Ability to write reports and communicate effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and staff.
- Ability to present information orally and respond to questions from administrators, teachers, staff, and students.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.
- Ability to solve problems using sound nursing judgment.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule forms.
