School Nurse

Reports to: School Principal
Full-Time (35 hours/week), exempt position following the 10-month school calendar as defined by the Board of Education and Collective Bargaining Agreement. May work up to 10 additional days in May, June, or August, paid at the per diem rate.

About the Role

This position treats students for medical issues, helps prevent physical issues and disease, and coordinates routine health assessments. You will report directly to the school principal and collaborate with school administrators, district directors, teachers, instructional coaches, school psychologists, social workers, support staff, students, guardians, and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional medical treatment of students.
  • Detect physical problems early and conduct health evaluations.
  • Prevent disease and promote health-education and immunization programs.
  • Maintain clinical records and coordinate vision, hearing, orthopedic screening, and health assessments.
  • Provide emergency aid to students and school staff.
  • Assist teachers in instructing students in health and nutrition education.
  • Build and maintain positive rapport and communication with students and guardians.
  • Monitor halls and study periods with other faculty and staff.
  • Establish and implement nurses' office management structure and rules ensuring physical and mental safety for all students, staff, and visitors.
  • Supervise students throughout school grounds and on educational trips as necessary.
  • Maintain required paperwork for student files, attendance, incident reports, and other records.
  • Stay updated on research, developments, and best practices in nursing.
  • Support diversity and equity initiatives within the school and district.
  • Foster a cooperative and participatory school climate, celebrating student achievements.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and training seminars.
  • Attend work as scheduled and arrive on time unless a qualified absence is approved.
  • Perform additional related duties within the scope of this position.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a related subject area and a registered nurse (RN) certificate are required.
  • Appropriate state license or certification; School Nurse Endorsement highly preferred.
  • Previous nursing experience with school-aged children highly preferred.
  • Driver’s license required for student transport is highly desirable.

  • Proficient with Google Suite or related software.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, reaching, and bending.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
