School Nurse

About the role

The School Nurse will support student health needs across the KIPP Nashville school community, either at a designated school or across multiple schools. This role reports to the Director of Student Health and partners closely with school-based leadership to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students.

Responsibilities

• Remove, modify, or reduce health-related barriers to learning
• Provide well-student care, first aid, immunizations, and assistance to students; create a comforting environment for ill students
• Administer daily and doctor-prescribed medications; assist students with physical disabilities
• Advise school staff on initiatives, processes, and systems to ensure a healthy school community
• Build and train staff on emergency preparedness plans for health emergencies
• Communicate with families regarding student wellness and health concerns
• Participate in student health events, including those on non-school days (e.g., New Student Registration)
• Perform screenings for scoliosis, vision, hearing, height, weight, and other conditions; make referrals and follow-up
• Complete, update, and maintain student health records, accident reports, and required documentation
• Ensure 100% collection of student health documentation for incoming new students
• Maintain and audit physical student health files annually
• Transfer health materials and information for student transfers between campuses
• Maintain the security of confidential information
• Collect and maintain student incident forms, ensuring documentation of pertinent details
• Collaborate with school staff to create and maintain wellness programming
• Maintain and enforce mandated COVID protocols for staff and students

Requirements

• Current non-restricted TN Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) is required; B.S.N. preferred
• 2+ years of nursing experience; pediatric experience preferred
• Current BLS, First Aid, and AED certification
• Knowledge of evaluation and treatment plans for clients with various illnesses and injuries
• Ability to apply current nursing research and theory to daily practice
• Skill in patient care and use of medical equipment
• Ability to plan and effectively communicate healthcare-related information to individuals and groups
• Ability to develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with co-workers, patients, families, and administrators

Physical Demands

• Minimal physical exertion required; light work involving exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently
• Generally requires sitting, standing, and walking
• Possible travel between schools for coverage

Pay

Competitive hourly rate ranging from $34–$36/hour, commensurate with experience. This role is non-exempt and eligible for overtime.

Schedule

• Full-time, approximately 10 months per year (early August through the end of the school year)
• Typically Monday through Friday, day shift
