About the Role

To provide clean, safe, and sanitary facilities at the Alamo Navajo Community School throughout the school day or scheduled special events such as games, dances, etc. The custodian is expected to display personal initiative, gradually assuming the role of "caretaker" of the building and its facilities with a sense of responsibility similar to that for their own personal possessions.

Responsibilities

• Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Alamo Navajo School Board, Inc. Policies and Procedures.
• Represents Alamo Navajo School Board Inc. professionally to enhance community understanding of the program.
• Performs as a team player with a respectful and cooperative attitude toward fellow staff.
• Coordinates with the Supervisor to direct custodial work as required.
• Reports unsafe conditions, needed major repairs, damage, or theft of program property immediately.
• Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment, notifying the supervisor for replacements in advance.
• Inspects school facilities to ensure safe and attractive operations.
• Prepares the gymnasium for students, classes, and athletic events (e.g., moving floor mats, opening/closing bleachers, chairs, and portable stage).
• Replaces items such as light bulbs, toilet dispensers, and chalkboards to maintain the facility.
• Cleans and sweeps all assigned facility areas, including windows (inside and outside), vacuuming, and dusting.
• Clears snow and debris from sidewalks.
• Cleans and sanitizes all bathrooms daily and ensures they are well-stocked with supplies.
• Ensures security of facilities, equipment, and materials during assigned working hours.
• Responds to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms, graffiti).
• Participates in professional growth activities, including training related to the job.
• Takes and passes an annual physical examination by a licensed physician.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

• High School or GED Diploma and TABE test score at or above 8th grade level.
• Entry-level knowledge of safe, effective operation of common hand and power tools for institutional cleaning (e.g., industrial vacuum cleaners, power floor polishers).
• Knowledge of the use and handling of hazardous substances.
• Understanding of fire and safety practices.
• Sufficient English comprehension, oral, and reading skills to follow detailed instructions, communicate with staff, and read labels on cleaning products.
• Physically fit to lift or move up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
• Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities with strong positive references from previous employers (if applicable).

Qualifications

Indian Preference: Preferential consideration for employment will be given to persons of documented Navajo, American Indian, or Alaskan Native Tribal membership who meet the qualifications above, in accordance with P.L. 93-638 and the Navajo Nation Tribal Code.

Special Conditions

• This position is subject to fingerprinting and a criminal/character background investigation.
• Must provide documentation of immunity or immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, measles/rubella, and tuberculosis status (via skin test or X-ray) within thirty (30) days of hiring.

Pay

Grade E on the ANSB Inc., General Salary Scale.

Schedule

• 40 hours per week on a flexible schedule, including periodic night shifts, weekends, and special events.
• One-hour lunch break.
