About the role
The City of San José is recruiting for a part-time School Crossing Guards in the Police Department during the normal school year. The positions involve providing for the safe conduct of elementary and junior high school children across heavily traveled streets and reporting problems requiring possible police action.
Responsibilities
- Provide safe passage for students across busy streets.
- Report issues that require police intervention.
- Work split shifts with approximately ten (10) hours per week.
- Work outside regardless of weather conditions.
- Use physical abilities to sit, stand, walk, reach, push, pull, twist, rotate, bend, lift, carry up to 10 pounds, use a stop sign, use a whistle, etc.
Requirements
- Completion of eighth grade.
- Valid State of California driver's license may be required for some assignments.
- Ability to use personal vehicle for job duties.
- Pass a personal background investigation as required by the Police Department.
- Willingness to work in bad weather.
- Ability to work early morning, noon, and afternoon hours on school days.
- Able to read city maps.
- Access to a motor vehicle on a daily basis.
- Willingness and ability to work at assigned locations.
- Willingness and ability to work a split shift.
- Willingness and ability to wear uniform.
Qualifications
- Basic Competencies: Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies and federal and state rules and regulations. Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and writing. Ability and willingness to work in all-weather situations.
- Desirable Competencies: Knowledge of traffic laws of California and City of San Jose. Knowledge of traffic control techniques and procedures. Ability to recognize traffic hazardous. Knowledge of the traffic laws of the State of California and the City of San José. Ability to analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action. Tactful and courteous but firm with the public.
