School Counselor - Elementary

We invite you to consider joining us as a School Counselor, working with students to help them develop academically, personally, and socially, and to assist in career development through individual and group counseling, as well as classroom guidance sessions.
Responsibilities
- Academic/Educational Development
- Assist students in achieving school success and developing skills for life-long learning.
- Counsel students (individual and group) in academic, career, and personal/social concerns.
- Provide programs, activities, and services focused on healthy academic, social, and future success.
- Publicize and coordinate information about student opportunities such as enrichment programs, scholarships, and special programs.
- Personal/Social Development
- Assist students in developing interpersonal, intrapersonal, and social skills.
- Serve as an advocate for students and promote a healthy school climate and safe learning environment.
- Collaborate and consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and community resources regarding student issues.
- Assist with crisis intervention and identify prevention and intervention programs for students.
- Career Development
- Assist students in becoming aware of life/career choices and participate in career development activities.
- Offer guidance sessions on problem-solving, decision-making, and academic/career planning.
- Assist students with course selection (secondary) relative to their educational pursuits and career goals.
- Coordinate participation in career-related activities.
- Demonstrate commitment to improving professional competence.
- Assess student learning on an ongoing basis and adjust instruction to meet group/individual needs.
- Use the district curriculum to plan daily instructional activities.
- Verify graduation course and test requirements and prepare related reports.
- Work regularly with community agencies, businesses, college admission representatives, military personnel, and employers to bring resources to students.
- Consult daily with teachers, administrators, and county personnel.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Post-graduate certification/licensure endorsement in elementary, middle, or high school guidance by the Virginia Department of Education.
- Master’s degree with an emphasis in guidance and counseling.
- Working knowledge of appropriate counseling interventions in a school setting, including:
- Interpersonal relationships and facilitative skills.
- Brief counseling and group dynamics.
- Family systems and peer helper programs.
- Multicultural and cross-cultural helping approaches.
- Crisis intervention techniques.
- Educational and community resources for special school populations.
- Working knowledge of academic curriculum and methodologies of instruction.
- Demonstrated ability to:
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Perform crisis intervention, decision-making, and problem analysis.
- Resolve conflicts and build interpersonal relationships.
- Plan and multitask.
- Successfully complete the following background investigations/tests:
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History Investigation.
- State Police Criminal History Investigation.
- Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation.
- Tuberculosis Screening/Test.

The employee works in an office and school environment; the noise level is quiet to moderate.
Pay
$60,660.29 - $93,040.53 per year.
