About the role
The School Certifying Official (SCO) manages all activities associated with Veterans Affairs (VA) Education Benefit certification, supporting the academic transition and success of veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard members, Reservists, and their dependents. This role serves as a primary campus resource, providing information on VA benefits, admissions, enrollment, financial aid, and holistic veteran support services in alignment with the University’s mission and goals.
Responsibilities
- VA Benefit Certification & Compliance Process
- Efficiently process and submit enrollment certifications for various VA Education Benefit programs each semester; monitor and update certifications promptly as student enrollment status changes.
- Apply appropriate VA tuition and fee payments to student accounts; accurately identify overpayments, make necessary entries in PeopleSoft, and expedite the return of program funds to the VA when required.
- Maintain up-to-date, expert knowledge of federal VA educational programs, rules, and regulations; interpret and communicate these complex guidelines to students, faculty, academic advisors, and the general public to ensure institutional compliance.
- Perform high-level review of veteran and dependent class schedules and degree plans to ensure all certified courses directly apply to their program of study for proper compliance in accordance with Academic Advisor/Graduate Coordinator recommendation, University policies, and VA guidelines. Ensure proper calculation of appropriate tuition and fees when applicable.
- Student Support & Outreach
- Serve as a frontline resource providing accurate information regarding university admissions, enrollment processes, financial aid opportunities, academic success initiatives, and campus/community veteran support services.
- Collaborate with the MVSC team to plan, host, and execute comprehensive orientation programs designed to integrate new student veterans into the UNLV community.
- Assist with content creation, website updates, and social media management for the MVSC, promoting routine events, recognizing military anniversaries, and broadcasting pertinent veteran support messaging.
- Support the MVSC Executive Director with the planning, coordination, and execution of annual veteran support events and initiatives.
- Data Integrity & Administration
- Compile and analyze student veteran statistical data to assist the Executive Director in identifying trends and developing strategic retention programs to improve enrollment outcomes.
- Maintain meticulous, confidential student files and federal records in compliance with FERPA and VA guidelines for potential state and federal audits.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.
Qualifications
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn and apply, federal VA Education Benefit regulations and higher education compliance standards.
- Experience with or adaptability to student information systems (specifically PeopleSoft) and official VA certification portals.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to advise a diverse student population and collaborate with campus departments.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with a high degree of accuracy in data entry and financial record-keeping.
- Preferred Qualifications
- One year or more of experience with VA’s Enrollment Manager software.

Pay
Salary is $55,778.
