About the role

The Lompoc Unified School District is offering a Free School Bus Driver Training Program for individuals interested in becoming a licensed school bus driver. The program is designed to train individuals to operate school buses safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Transport students safely and efficiently to assigned locations along a designated route.
  • Perform regular safety inspections of buses.
  • Drive a school bus along a designated route.
  • Pick up and discharge students in accordance with time schedules.
  • Prepare related logs and reports.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.
  • Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus.
  • Assess incidents, complaints, accidents and potential emergency situations.
  • Resolve and recommend a resolution to the situation.
  • Administer first aid to passengers as needed.
  • Maintain buses in a clean and safe operating condition.
  • Conduct emergency evacuation drills.
  • Respond to inquiries including to students, parents, other school personnel.
  • Drive a vehicle to conduct work.

Requirements

  • Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and successful completion of bus driver training including valid California Class 'B' Drivers License with 'P' and 'S' endorsement.
  • Licenses and other Requirements: Valid California Class 'B' Driver’s License with 'P' and 'S' endorsement. California School Bus Driver Certificate. Blood Borne Pathogens. Fire Extinguisher training. First Aid and CPR Certificates. Pre-employment Drug Screening. Pre-employment Physical Exam. Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance. TB Clearance.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge: Safe and defensive driving practices. Proper operations of school buses. Applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations. Basic first aid procedures. Basic record-keeping techniques. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Health and safety regulations. Oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability: Drive a school bus safely and efficiently. Conduct safety inspections and perform routine preventive maintenance. Learn and apply policies and procedures related to student discipline on buses. Maintain a safe discipline level among passengers. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Learn and follow designated routes. Learn the functionality and tolerance of the dual air braking system. Learn the proper use of the electronically controlled transmissions installed in the fleet. Maintain bus in clean and proper working condition. Administer first aid. Maintain routine records. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Communicate effectively with others. Meet schedules and timelines. Operate a two-way radio.

Benefits

No compensation is provided to individuals participating in the Free School Bus Driver Training Program. Upon successful completion of the program and becoming licensed, applicants are eligible to apply for a permanent School Bus Driver position with the Lompoc Unified School District.

Schedule

The Free School Bus Driver Training Program includes:

  • Bus Driver Classroom Training: Approximately 40 hours of classroom training. Applications will be reviewed by June 18, 2026. Successful applicants will be invited to attend the Free Bus Driver Training Program starting on June 22, 2026.
  • Bus Driver Behind the Wheel Training: 40 hours behind the wheel training to be assigned upon completion of the classroom training and passing the final.

Pay

No pay is provided for participants in the Free School Bus Driver Training Program. Upon successful completion of the program and becoming licensed, applicants are eligible to apply for a permanent School Bus Driver position with the Lompoc Unified School District.

Application Process

To apply, applicants must complete the application form and submit all required documentation. The application process includes submitting a K4 printout from DMV, attending the orientation on June 22, 2026, and successfully completing the bus driver training program.

Employment Standards

  • To be considered for a permanent School Bus Driver position, applicants must complete the LUSD School Bus Driver Training Program (or another program that qualifies them to be appropriately licensed) and become licensed to operate a school bus.
