About the role

The position involves driving a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to an assigned location on a designated route. The driver also ensures the safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses, and performs regular safety inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Drives a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to an assigned location on a designated route.
  • Affirms safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.
  • Performs regular safety inspections of buses.
  • Communicates with District personnel, parents and legal guardians to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.
  • Assists students and other passengers by providing safe loading and unloading from buses including both normal transport and emergency situations.
  • Safely transports and assists medically fragile and students with special needs.
  • Conducts required daily safety inspections of buses.
  • Reports mechanical malfunctions or other problems as required.
  • Administers first aid to passengers as needed.
  • Determines appropriate action in emergency situations according to established guidelines.
  • Maintains buses in a clean and safe operating condition.
  • Cleans buses, refuels, services and prepares vehicles for operation.
  • Maintains order and discipline among passengers on the bus and while waiting at bus stops in accordance with policies related to disciplining students.
  • Prepares related logs and reports as necessary including pre-trip, field trips, accident, passenger incident and inspection reports.
  • Maintains route, passenger misconduct, mileage and student counts records.
  • Transports students, faculty and parents on field trips or other events.
  • Meets scheduled departure and arrival times as assigned.
  • Utilizes two-way radios for bus to bus and bus to base communications.

Requirements

  • Successful passage of the District's job-related proficiency test.
  • California School Bus Driver's Certificate.
  • Valid California Class B Driver License with P/S endorsements.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.
  • Medical Examiner's Certificate K-4 report (issued within last 30 days - online documents are not considered official and will not be accepted).

Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or equivalent GED and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

Skills

  • Safe and defensive driving practices.
  • Proper operations of school buses.
  • Applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.
  • Basic first aid, CPR & AED procedures.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Health and safety regulations.
  • Oral and written communication skills.

Benefits

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Transportation, the position offers advanced step salary placement to Step C: $25.50/hour. Positions are 5-6 hours/day (split shift) during the school year; 206 paid days.
