School-Based Prevention Specialist

About the role

The East Central Ohio Educational Service Center (ECOESC) is seeking a school-based Prevention Specialist to work in targeted Belmont County Schools. This position is full-time during the school year, from mid-August to early June.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, develop, and implement mental health promotion and substance abuse prevention programs for youth
  • Provide early intervention/student support services to students and their families designed to meet the non-academic barriers that interfere with the student’s success in school
  • Refer student and family to school-based and/or community resources as needed
  • Participate in community-based process activities (Agency liaison person, serve on various community and state committees, task forces, coalitions, etc.)
  • Attend required workshops and trainings to improve professional skills and to obtain or maintain state prevention certification
  • Provide teacher In-Service/professional development programs as needed

Requirements

  • Minimum of 21 years of age
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, community health, sociology, psychology or related human services field
  • Must currently be certified as a Prevention Specialist or willing to begin the process of prevention certification following the guidelines determined by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board upon hire
  • Must be drug-free and adhere to the Program’s Drug-free Workplace policy
  • Must undergo FBI and BCI background check

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of state, federal, and local laws relative to agency’s programs
  • Knowledge of the agency’s vision, mission, and purpose
  • Knowledge of the dynamics of human behavior, psychosocial issues, family development, learning theory, theory of change, and group dynamics
  • Knowledge of methods, strategies, and techniques of substance abuse prevention and mental health promotion
  • Cultural competency issues, particularly in regard to risk and protective factors for substance abuse and mental illness
  • Knowledge of community resources and how to access the resources

Pay

$32,000 - $45,000.00/year based on experience

Schedule

Full-time mid-August through early June
