About the role

The Department of Music, Theatre, & Dance maintains two interlocking and equally important educational components: traditional classroom and practical production. The Scenic Shop Supervisor is essential to both the teaching and production missions of the Department.

This position will supervise and instruct students in the lab (classroom) setting as well as be responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the Scene Shop for all departmental productions.

Responsibilities

The Scenic Shop Supervisor is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the Scene Shop during the specified office hours as determined by the University and the Department of Music, Theatre, & Dance’s Theater Program.

Responsibilities include supervising and instructing students in a lab setting for theater productions, collaborating with Technical Director and/or designers to ensure productions are built to specifications, set-up and prepare work areas, load-in and strike productions, attending technical rehearsals and performances, and assigning duties to student workers and student assistants.

Additionally, this position will establish and prioritize work schedules to ensure production schedules are met, check and approve work, and ensure that the shop is maintained in a safe and clean manner.

Requirements

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, and perform duties in a studio/shop environment.
  • Ability to read/interpret blueprints and other production drawings such as floor plans, sections and working drawings.
  • Ability to operate construction tools and equipment specific to theatrical construction.
  • Ability to understand/execute construction techniques.
  • Good knowledge of set design.
  • Knowledge of counter-weight systems and basic rigging.
  • Position requires a flexible work schedule.
  • Ability to tolerate noise, dust, and fumes from paints and dyes.
  • Ability to tolerate bending, kneeling, twisting, lifting, walking, and standing throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift up to at least 70 lbs.
  • Ability to work from heights (such as ladders and/or grids).

Qualifications

Required Education: High school graduate or equivalent education/experience that equates to a high school diploma.

Required Experience: OSHA 30 and HAZWOPER, or ability to obtain within 6 months, previous technical theatrical shop experience, previous theatrical rigging or metal working experience, and previous experience using counter weight systems and basic rigging.

Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher; or equivalent with experience and/or training that equates to the degree requirement.

Preferred Experience: Previous technical theatrical shop experience in an educational setting, previous related supervisory experience, and previous experience drafting blueprints.

Pay

Salary $45,689 to $57,112 commensurate with education and experience.

Schedule

Monday-Friday 9:00AM-6:00PM, with a flexible work schedule required.
