Scalehouse Attendant
Hennepin County’s Environment and Energy Department is seeking a Scale House Attendant to process commercial hauler transactions at the Brooklyn Park Transfer Station and Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC), and to handle resident transactions at citizen drop-off facilities that manage household hazardous waste, recyclables, and problem materials such as electronics and appliances.
Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into this position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus.
Location and hours
This part-time position works at three sites:
- Brooklyn Park Transfer Station (BPTS), 8100 Jefferson Hwy, Brooklyn Park, MN
- South Hennepin Recycling and Problem Waste Drop-off Center, 1400 West 96th Street, Bloomington, MN
- Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC), 505 N 5th Street, Minneapolis, MN
Public transportation is available only at HERC. The position requires 20–30 hours per week, including early-morning shifts (starting at 3:45 am) and weekend shifts at all locations.
About the role
This is a limited-duration (temporary), part-time, non-benefit-earning position expected to last up to two years. It is internally classified as an Office Specialist I.
Responsibilities
- Operate Point of Sale (POS) systems and process financial transactions.
- Greet residents and commercial haulers in a friendly, professional manner.
- Record all business transactions efficiently.
- Answer customer questions professionally, by phone or in person.
- Multitask various duties while working in the scale house.
- Communicate with external partners and vendors.
Requirements
One of the following:
- One or more full-time equivalent years of office clerical experience.
- Six months of office clerical experience plus completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program.
Note: Education may substitute for experience on a semester (12 credits) basis.
Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds and stand for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with scale-house software (Paradigm or CompuWeigh).
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and/or Access.
- Experience using call-center systems.
- Customer-service experience in person and by telephone.
- Experience performing cash transactions or processing electronic payments.
- Ability to work in a high-volume customer-service center.
- Ability to record all commercial hauler and resident transactions in the county’s Paradigm software.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently with minimal direction.
