Summary

Under the technical supervision of a pathologist, Technical Supervisor, and administrative supervision of the Administrative Laboratory Director, performs a wide variety of routine and specialized studies on blood, urine, and body fluids samples as requisitioned by a physician, to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, following established standards and practices. Independent judgment, professional education, and certification are required.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years preferred.
  • Successful rotation through all clinical laboratory departments or its equivalent.
  • Requires three months clinical training and on-the-job training to become familiar with the hospital's policies and procedures and to become proficient in all phases of the job requirements.
  • May be assigned to a specific department in the lab or may rotate in a minimum of two or a maximum of all departments.
  • Complies with established standards and practices/procedures. Ensures timely completion of assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and standards.
  • Fulfills quality control procedures to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures.
  • Recognizes and addresses instrument malfunctions and out-of-control test results.
  • Ensures proper labeling, collection, receipt, storage, and disposal of specimens.
  • Adheres to all established Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Completes proficiency and competency checks and reads and signs new and revised policies and procedures in a timely manner.
  • Assembles supplies and equipment and ensures proper functioning and cleanliness of equipment and work area.

Education:

  • Associate's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.
  • OR High school graduate or equivalent with successful completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and holding the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).
  • ASCP or other acceptable certification agency preferred.
