SAFETY SPECIALIST I

About the role

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS), Executive Support Office, is hiring a Safety Specialist I in Pearl City.

Responsibilities

• Conduct inspections of in-progress repair, maintenance, and project sites, including job sites of private contractors engaged in construction on behalf of the BWS.
• Develop materials and visual aids for Safety Specialist II for training sessions; conduct, schedule, and coordinate training with divisions.
• Inspect facility working conditions, equipment, and protective gear.
• Conduct investigations of accidents.
• Provide sound interpretation of pertinent laws, codes, rules and regulations as it applies to BWS projects, and ensure compliance with OSHA, HIOSH, EPA and other applicable regulatory agencies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Special Work Requirements

• Work evening, weekends and holidays as necessary.
• Exposure to noise and dust; work at heights, confined spaces such as tunnels, wells, and reservoirs; hike in mountainous areas; walk over rough and uneven terrain; exposure to vehicular traffic at job sites; work in adverse weather conditions.

Qualifications

• Education Requirement: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, or a related field.
• Experience Requirement: One year of professional experience in industrial safety and accident prevention activities.
• License/Certificate Requirement: Prior to appointment, possession of a valid appropriate driver's license (automobile/Type 3). Prior to completion of probation, First Aid & CPR certification.

Skills

• Knowledge of safety laws and other accepted standards applicable to industrial safety and accident prevention.
• Knowledge of industrial and construction accident hazards and methods of correction and prevention.
• Knowledge of common industrial safety devices and equipment.
• Knowledge of safety inspection principles, practices, and procedures.
• Ability to make safety inspections and detect unsafe conditions and practices.
• Ability to interpret and enforce pertinent safety laws, codes, rules, and regulations.
• Ability to investigate and determine the causes of accidents.
• Ability to conduct safety education and instruction courses.
