About the Role

This exempt, salaried position reports primarily to the Human Resource Manager and collaborates closely with Operations teams to improve, implement, maintain, and evaluate Safety and Environmental Programs at Ellwood Engineered Castings.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Serious Injury & Fatality (SIF) program, focusing on identifying and investigating incidents with potential for fatality, life-altering injury, or significant environmental impact.
  • Conduct required safety training and education programs, demonstrating proper use of safety equipment.
  • Provide new-employee safety orientations and equipment training as needed, maintaining documentation of all training.
  • Work with department supervision to conduct thorough and timely incident investigations, determining root causes and prevention strategies.
  • Perform frequent plant safety and housekeeping inspections, observing workers for safe and unsafe behaviors.
  • Develop, maintain, and report on key safety performance indicators.
  • Schedule and coordinate required monitoring and sampling for facility industrial hygiene and environmental factors (e.g., air quality, noise).
  • Coordinate the Contractor Safety Program prior to on-site projects, auditing contract workers to ensure adherence to company standards.
  • Develop and maintain the company’s written safety programs, documentation, and records.
  • Maintain the OSHA 300 Log in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Assist in the effective and compliant management of Workers Compensation claims.
  • Facilitate regular safety meetings and provide guidance on all safety concerns.
  • Lead and develop the Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) and Safe Start programs, promoting a proactive approach to workplace safety through observation, feedback, and positive reinforcement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety or a related field preferred; equivalent experience (3-5 years) in an industrial or heavy manufacturing environment will be considered.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet software programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership abilities.
  • Results-oriented with a strong desire to succeed.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Prior experience in safety and/or environmental roles is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Flexible working schedule, with occasional travel required.
