About the Role
Ultium Cells is a joint venture lithium-ion automotive battery cell manufacturing plant between LG Energy Solutions and General Motors. This new, high-technology facility will feature the latest battery cell manufacturing technology, representing a commitment of over $2.3 billion. The Safety Specialist will focus on improving health and safety at the Ultium Cells facility by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards while engaging employees in developing a strong health and safety culture.
Responsibilities
- Support the commissioning of facilities and production equipment.
- Participate in onsite launch activities and the development of Task-Based Risk Assessments.
- Support adoption and implementation of the Workplace Safety System and drive the development of Ultium Cells-specific safety and health standards.
- Deliver annual facility health and safety goals and objectives to the workforce.
- Support Manufacturing Learning and Development in identifying and facilitating the Training Management System and launching site-specific health and safety training.
- Deliver New Hire and Contractor Orientations.
- Ensure effective auditing, observations, and reporting of compliance with safety standards and procedures.
- Participate in the plant’s Emergency Response Planning Process.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with operations, construction, and plant floor teams.
Requirements
- OSHA 30, ASP, or CSP certification (or willingness to obtain).
- 0-3 years of experience in General Industry and a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to work selected weekends, holidays, and night shifts (8pm-4am).
- Strong knowledge of and experience working with OSHA and state/local regulations.
- Comfortable working in a team setting.
- Skill in analyzing and evaluating technical data, test results, and reports.
- Positive attitude, self-driven, strong interpersonal skills, and demonstrated effectiveness in accomplishing goals.
- Strong attention to detail and organization.
- Willingness and ability to travel 10-15% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of lasers, ionizing radiation, and non-ionizing radiation.
- Proficiency in Process Safety Management (PSM).
- Familiarity with combustible dust practices.
- Previous experience working with on-site contractors.
- Bilingual proficiency in Korean and English.
- Sufficient knowledge of ergonomics.
- Previous experience in a startup environment or union setting.
- 3+ years of experience in General Industry and a manufacturing environment.
- Associate degree or some higher education.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Capable of walking on variable surfaces for extended durations.
- Proficient in climbing stairs and/or ladders.
- Aptitude for lifting and moving equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
