Safety Specialist

Georgia-Pacific’s Toledo, OR Containerboard facility is seeking a qualified Safety Specialist to join our team, assisting in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the facility’s safety programs. This role reports directly to the site Safety & Health Manager and supports occupational safety improvement efforts, including critical hazard risk reduction and Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) integration.

About the Facility

Georgia-Pacific Toledo is a producer of brown paper used to make cardboard and a leader in recycling in the Northwest. The mill is located within a 10-minute drive to the Pacific Ocean, offering nearby outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and boating.

Responsibilities

• Manage competing demands with a strong systems approach, organizational skills, teamwork, and clear priority-setting.
• Oversee contractor safety management, machine guarding, walking and working surfaces, MOPED, Save My Life permitting, ergonomics, and hearing conservation.
• Design, implement, and lead safety programs, compliance strategies, and management systems.
• Prepare and conduct regulatory training and increase awareness of safety improvement needs among facility personnel.
• Perform ongoing evaluations of site safety programs facility-wide.
• Assist in preparation of business/corporate-sponsored safety strategies, recommendations, and reporting.
• Participate in and/or lead Operational Learning Team sessions based on Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) models to improve safeguards.
• Respond to site personnel needs for assistance and support on safety-related issues.
• Assist with the development of site Safety Improvement Plans (SIPs) to execute the Path to Zero safety strategy.
• Plan, promote, organize, direct, and audit safety-related activities in the field.
• Provide leadership to mill critical hazard-related safety teams and Compliance System Owners (CSOs).
• Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for mill projects, ensuring compliance with safety requirements and applying Prevention through Design (PtD) principles.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science or higher in an Environmental Health and Safety field of study OR four (4) or more years of experience in a safety leadership and management role.
• Experience and knowledge of federal/state safety regulatory requirements.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Power BI).

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate Safety Professional (ASP) and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certifications.
• Experience with safety management in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience in manufacturing, pulp and paper, or chemical facility.
• Experience establishing sustainable systems for safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.
• Knowledge of occupational safety management and ability to apply and achieve results.
