About the role

The Safety Representative assists the Director of Loss Control and the project team in implementing safety controls, processes, and procedures to prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, biological, or ergonomic hazards. This on-site position provides hands-on experience in conducting inspections, accident/incident investigations, and enforcing compliance with health and safety laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Loss Control in developing and maintaining procedures to protect workers from hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
  • Perform administrative tasks, including data entry for injury reporting in the company’s safety electronic enterprise system.
  • Conduct near-miss and accident investigations under the oversight of the Director of Loss Control or Safety Manager to identify root causes and preventive measures.
  • Support the project team and safety lead in inspecting and evaluating workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with safety standards, government regulations, and contractual requirements.
  • Update Health and Safety Plans (HASP), Job Hazard Analyses (JHA), and other safety documentation as directed by the Director of Loss Control.
  • Assist with record-keeping and scheduling of safety training, toolbox talks, and ensure employees have appropriate certifications for their roles.
  • Conduct scheduled and unscheduled safety audits at job sites, enforce the safety program, and report violations.
  • Complete daily safety checklists for tools, equipment, and fleet as needed.
  • Assist with the administrative completion of incident reports and investigations.
  • Promote a zero-accident environment and communicate safe work policies, procedures, and compliance requirements to field leadership.
  • Support compliance with the company’s Safety Program, OSHA regulations, company policies, and contractual safety requirements.
  • Perform additional assignments as required by operational needs or directed by the Director of Loss Control, project team, or safety lead.
  • Meet background check and fitness-for-duty requirements as specified by assigned projects or customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in health and safety, environmental science, or a related field (preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in a safety-related role within the construction industry.
  • Familiarity with Health and Safety Plans (HASP) and Job Hazard Analyses (JHA).
  • OSHA 10-hour and OSHA 30-hour construction safety certification or equivalent; maintain competency through 24 hours of formal safety coursework every four years.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations.
  • Certifications such as CHST, STS, or OSHA 500 are a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Valid state driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Flexibility to adapt to varying work schedules and locations within the Northern Virginia area.
  • Must be able to work on-site; remote work is not available.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit, see, talk, hear, and use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls.
  • Frequently required to walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to commute to field locations and navigate job sites.

Work Environment

  • Regularly exposed to outdoor conditions, including wet/humid environments, moving mechanical/electrical parts, high places, dust, fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, and varying weather conditions (sunlight, cold, heat).
  • Potential exposure to risks such as electrical shock and vibration.
  • Noise levels range from moderate to loud.

  • Work shift: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
