About the role
The Safety organization at Peoples Gas is responsible for leading and supporting over 750 team members, 450k customers, and 14,000 miles of natural gas pipeline. They oversee safety initiatives, emergency response, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain safety programs and procedures, becoming a subject matter expert (SME).
- Oversee natural disaster emergency response, particularly during hurricane recovery efforts.
- Lead investigations of employee injuries and near-misses.
- Provide respiratory protection employee fit testing, inspect SCBA, air packs, and fire suits.
- Facilitate the SMS Safety Management System, ensuring compliance and implementing improvements.
- Oversee fleet safety, including driver score cards, aggression reports, and Smith Driver training.
- Investigate all vehicle collisions, prepare reports, and recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with FDOT regulations and hazardous material transportation guidelines.
- Support front-line management with safety programs and practices.
- Conduct field safety observations, identify and evaluate hazards, and recommend control strategies.
- Train employees and apprentices on safety-related topics such as respiratory protection, pre-job safety briefings, trenching & excavation, Smith Driver, fire extinguisher use, and emergency response to natural gas.
- Lead safety committees and present monthly safety meetings to service areas.
- Participate in environmental compliance activities, classify and label hazardous waste, and conduct service area environmental audits.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least 5 years’ experience as a safety professional, or master’s degree in a related field with at least 4 years’ experience, or high school diploma with at least 10 years’ relevant experience, with increasing levels of responsibility.
- A minimum of 8 years’ related gas utility operations or related industry operations experience; or professional safety experience.
- A thorough understanding of safe work practices and programs related to the utility industry.
- Familiarity with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- An autonomous work schedule to maximize field engagement and impact.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal skills, and experience in a diverse workforce environment.
- Ability to research, develop, and coordinate comprehensive safety and health programs.
- A high work standard and high stress tolerance.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to create and present audit reports, investigation reports, safety programs, and safe work practices.
- Good planning, organizing, and change management skills.
Qualifications
- Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) Certification: OHST, CHST, ASP, CSP, CIH.
- Safety committee participation or other safety experience.
- Familiarity with federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations.
- A thorough understanding of construction, maintenance, and operations of the gas utility industry.
