About the role
The Plant H&S Specialist position is open at Johns Manville in Defiance, OH. We are seeking a high-energy individual with a passion for driving continuous improvement and excellence in Safety and Health performance.
Responsibilities
- Supports and promotes safe practices in alignment with company commitments, policies, and compliance requirements.
- Acts as an OSHA regulatory compliance resource.
- Led or participates in incident investigations (injury, property damage, near-hit, environmental deviations, etc.) and root cause analysis, and works with the plant operations team to determine appropriate corrective/preventative action.
- Establish and drive continuous improvement in the facility's safety monitoring and recordkeeping systems to ensure compliance with all JM policies and federal regulatory requirements.
- Aid the plant operations team and JM Corporate Safety to evaluate and determine appropriate proactive safety strategies for projects that may have an impact on the facility or employees.
- Develop action plans for safety activities, coordinate the plant Safety Committee team, perform follow-up on these activities, and report status to the Plant Manager.
- Facilitate safety and health training for all plant personnel.
- Support plant initiatives towards Lean, Kaizen, Cost Reduction, 5S and other facility improvements.
- Ensure compliance with all safety and health policies, procedures, and programs.
- Ensure all safety and health metrics and reports are completed and communicated in a timely manner.
- Assist in regard to workers compensation cases.
- Support the training coordinator for all H&S-related trainings through SafetySkills and other computer-based training (CBT).
Requirements
- Must possess one of the following:
- An associates degree in Safety and Health, Environmental
- A professional certificate in Occupational Health & Safety
- A recognized professional certification in Occupational Health & Safety
- Equivalent degree
- Prior Safety Specific Training (OSHA 30 Hour, Certificate in Occupational Safety & Health, etc.)
- Two years' experience in a safety role in an industrial setting or four years of relevant industrial experience in a JM facility
Qualifications
- Comfortable working in a plant environment
- Working knowledge of federal safety and health laws (e.g. OSHA, EPA, etc.)
- Ability to work with respective outside agencies and contracted employees
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
- Ability to use a variety of software applications to analyze, monitor data, create reports, and presentations
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, extensive walking, confined spaces, wear a respirator (if applicable) and handle exposures to hot/cold environments
- Excellent communication, training and organizational skills
- Demonstrated Root-Cause analysis skills (RCCA, 5-Whys)
- Leadership skills to direct personnel, implement initiatives, supervising teams, and performing follow-up activities
- Analytical ability to assess complex situations and apply problem solving strategies
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to be on call, as needed 24/7
- Ability to travel up to 5%
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Certifications in Safety, Environmental or Occupational Health (e.g. CSP, CIH, OHST, SMS, CEM, CHMM, etc.)

$71,300.00 - $98,000.00 Annual
