SAFETY & OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SPECIALIST
About the role
This position supports the implementation and administration of the DISA Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) program.
Responsibilities
- Helps evaluate the implementation and administration of the DISA OSH program.
- Provides advice, guidance, and assistance to DISA subordinate directors on diverse, complex, and hazardous conditions requiring specialized safety approaches.
- Plans, controls, and evaluates a comprehensive safety and occupational health program in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Provides counsel and technical advice/guidance to DISA subordinate activities on resolving hazardous conditions and improving program improvements.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of field activity safety and occupational health procedures and policies, assessing compliance with command safety policy and standards.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Must have served 3 months after latest competitive appointment in the Federal service.
- Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable in difficulty and responsibility to GS-09 if outside the Federal service.
- Must be able to obtain/maintain a security clearance.
- May be required to wear personal protective equipment under required situations.
Qualifications
- Major study -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
- Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
- Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Health Physicist (CHP).
Specialized Experience
- Assisting in evaluating safety and occupational health practices, regulations, and/or safety trainings to ensure program effectiveness.
- Performing inspections and surveys for safety and occupational compliance to identify potential new hazards.
Education
Substitutes for education at GS-11 level: Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
