SAFETY & OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SPEC.

Responsibilities

• Analyze and resolve high-risk hazards present at the industrial complex.
• Identify and correct industrial hazards throughout painting, metal, woodworking, electrical and electronic shops, major warehousing and supply operations, acid-caustic storage areas, industrial laboratory facilities, piers, and dry docks.
• Apply hazard analysis methods and techniques to resolve operational safety and health problems.
• Initiate procedures implementing technical safety standards, codes, and safety requirements for a wide variety of operations and activities.
• Serve as a technical expert on Nuclear Program issues, representing management at meetings, conferences, and critiques; advise members on Environmental Safety and Health Department actions.
• Inspect work environments to ensure safety and recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
• Apply methods, techniques, and abatements to control or eliminate unsafe practices or conditions.
• Advise investigation boards convened to ascertain causal factors precipitating fatalities, serious injuries, or substantial property damage.
• Recommend specific investigative techniques and the application of appropriate safety standards and sound practices.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level (time-in-grade requirement).
• Appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
• Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
• This is a bargaining unit position.
• Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
• Required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and chemicals). Participation in medical surveillance programs is required.
• May require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS, including remote or isolated sites; must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• Subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements; overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
• Must be willing and able to climb ladders and scaffolding.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must include managing and evaluating a high-risk naval shipyard or nuclear industrial safety and occupational health program to identify and resolve hazardous environmental operating conditions for ensuring a safe and efficient work environment.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
