Safety Monitor (26 - 27 SY)

About the Role

To provide for the safety of the school district environment through observation, prevention, assistance, and resolution of potential conflicts.

Responsibilities

• Observes students' verbal and physical actions to ensure a safe, orderly environment in all areas of the school, including hallways, stairwells, bathrooms, exterior areas, gym, cafeteria, and during arrival and dismissal.
• Patrols assigned areas in accordance with established procedures and training.
• Enforces school health, safety, and conduct rules to ensure the health and safety of students.
• Acts proactively to prevent conflicts or concerns from developing and resolves minor student confrontations in a timely and effective manner.
• Refers safety issues and serious misconduct to designated teachers or administrators for discipline support.
• De-escalates student conflicts and manages student behavior in compliance with individualized education programs and Section 504 plans.
• Follows procedures for reporting and assessing student injuries.
• Ensures appropriate student behavior toward staff and other students, promoting courtesy and positive relationships.
• Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other techniques to assist students in developing appropriate behavior.
• Maintains order in classrooms, libraries, gymnasiums, and on school grounds by removing students exhibiting unruly behavior.
• Utilizes Safe Crisis Management techniques when appropriate.
• Checks lavatories, hallways, stairwells, parking lots, and the exterior perimeter of buildings to ensure security.
• Directs students and visitors, ensuring all visitors are registered and issued a pass.
• Patrols school grounds to check for vandalism, illegal activity, and hazardous conditions.
• Verifies student attendance and searches for students who are on campus but not in assigned class.
• Confirms students without a hall pass and reports those suspected of skipping class.
• Assists with investigations into safety, residency, and student discipline issues, prepares incident reports, and testifies in court or disciplinary hearings as necessary.
• Uses district computers and software for completing investigations and reports.
• Controls traffic during school bus arrival and departure.
• Communicates in a calm, neutral, and non-confrontational manner, modeling nondiscriminatory practices.
• Stays current with district safety plans, policies, and procedures, reporting repetitive compliance concerns to supervisors.
• Complies with individualized education programs or Section 504 plans when working with students with disabilities.
• Uses security equipment such as radio communication devices, video surveillance, metal detectors, and other tools.
• Completes yearly training, including NASRO, Safe Crisis Management, CPR/AED, Active Shooter, All Hazards Plans, Child Abuse, and Mandated Reporting.
• Assists with preparation for drills such as fire, lockdown, emergency evacuations, and other hazard plans.
• Provides crisis prevention and intervention where appropriate.
• Prepares and maintains routine event records, daily and weekly logs in accordance with district policies.
• May escort or transport assigned students between classes or within the school.
• Performs duties at athletic and after-school events.
• Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with school policy, administrative regulations, and state and federal laws.

Requirements

• Perform and pass all necessary yearly training, including NASRO, Safe Crisis Management, CPR/AED, Active Shooter, All Hazards Plans, Child Abuse, Mandated Reporting, and other required Safe Schools Trainings.
• Familiarity with and ability to use district computers and software for investigations and reports.
• Compliance with individualized education programs and Section 504 plans.
